John Cree (of Barree Township, PA) was born on 23 October 1746 in in the vicinity of, Belfast, Ireland. He was most likely born near Donaghadee or Newtownards in County Down.1 He was the son of Male#2 Cree.

Very little is known about the early life of John Cree. It had been a family tradition among some of his descendants that he was born in New Jersey and that his parents came from County Down, Ireland. However, when I was a young boy, my old uncle, Harry W. Cree (1857-1937), often told me that his grandfather, David Cree (1795-1871), had told him many times that his father, John Cree, was born in County Down, Ireland in the vicinity of Belfast. Furthermore, John Cree's youngest daughter Anne states in the 1870 Federal Census that her father was foreign born. My uncle Harry Cree also told me that his grandfather told him on numerous occasions that his father John and the David Cree who lived in Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, Pa. were brothers and that they often visited each other while John was still living in Huntingdon County. As a matter of fact, a recent (2005) DNA match confirms the fact that at some point in time, John and David Cree had indeed shared a common ancestor. Most, if not all, of the other Cree branches that migrated to Pennsylvania prior to 1800 had originated in Northern Ireland. The names of John's parents or any further information on their whereabouts has never been established.

The earliest recorded date of information that I have on John Cree is apparently in 1778 when we find a John Cree on the tax lists of Rye Township, Cumberland County, Pa. He is listed at this time as a 'married taxable.' Also during this same year he served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the 7th Battalion of the Cumberland County Militia. Shortly after this time, he apparently moved to Hamilton Township, Cumberland (now Franklin) County where he is shown in the 1780 tax lists and where he served in the 5th Battalion of the Cumberland County Militia from August of 1780 through June of 1781. While still living in Hamilton Township, Cumberland County, John Cree evidently bought property in Barree Township, Bedford (now Huntingdon) County, Pa. In 1783, he is shown in the Bedford County assessment lists as being a non-resident taxable of Barree Township.

Soon after 1783, John Cree apparently left Hamilton Township, Cumberland County and settled on this Barree Township property which was located along the East Branch of the Standing Stone Creek in what is now Jackson Township, northern Huntingdon County. He is shown at that time on the tax assessment lists as owning 150 acres of land. About this same time, David Cree also left Hamilton Township, Cumberland County and settled on land in Dublin Township, Bedford County, in what is now southern Huntingdon County (see first paragraph). While living in Barree Township, John Cree served as the township tax collector in 1792, also as a township constable in 1792 and as a township road supervisor in 1793. He also served in the Huntingdon County Militia and was a member of the Manor Hill Presbyterian Church. He continued to reside on his Barree Township homestead until about 1805 when he, with his entire family, migrated a few miles westward to Beccaria Township, Clearfield County, Pa., in the vicinity of what is now the village of Glen Hope. He remained in this location until his death in 1824.

The maiden name of John Cree's wife is unknown although we do know from various records that her first name was Jane (or Janet). John Cree and his wife were the parents of at least six known children. The location of the gravesites of John and Jane Cree are unknown, although it can be presumed that they are buried somewhere in Beccaria Township, Clearfield County, where they both died.

It might be noted here that most Cree researchers have assumed that the John Cree shown in the 1778 tax and military records of Rye Township, Cumberland County, was a son of Robert Cree, Sr. and his wife, Janet Hamilton who also lived and were taxed in Rye Township during the Revolutionary War years. They had at least several known sons who served in the Cumberland County Militia during the War. However, there is no documented proof that this John Cree was one of these sons or if, in fact, Robert Cree, Sr. ever had a son John. He never listed a son John in his will. Furthermore, there is only a difference of 14 years between the ages of Robert, Sr. (born 1732) and the John Cree (born 1746) whose record is shown here, so it is practically impossible for them to have been father and son.

Robert H. Cree (2005)

WILL OF JOHN CREE

I, John Cree, of the Township of Beccaria of Clearfield County and State of Pennsylvania, being in a weak state of health but in my perfect senses, do declare this to be my last will and testament. I direct and appoint that four hundred dollars be placed at interest by my Executors, and that they pay to my beloved wife Jane Cree the lawful interest of the same yearly and every year while she shall remain my widow, but in case she shall remarry then the above named sum shall be disposed of as here-after directed. I also give and bequeath to my beloved wife one cow. I also order and direct that she shall have her choice of one of my horses and one cow and saddle as her own bona fide property and in case she shall survive her mother, shall receive one hundred dollars at the expiration of one year after the decease of her mother, but in case she should not survive her and dies leaving no lawful issue, then the above named one hundred dollars shall be equally divided between my two sons William and David Cree.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Jane McKee (late Cree) one dollar to be paid to her one year after my decease. I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary McKee (late Cree) one dollar to be paid to her one year after my decease. I give and bequeath to my son William Cree one cow and my rifle. I give and bequeath to my son David Cree one horse, one cow and my watch. I give and bequeath to my two sons William and David Cree all the remainder of my property, to be equally divided between them.

I direct that in case my beloved wife shall marry, then the four hundred dollars placed at interest as above shall be paid to the before named persons.

I appoint and direct my son William Cree and my friend Isaac Rickets to be my Executors, to act and perform as I would or could were I living.

Given under my hand and seal this ninth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixteen (1816).

It is reasonably well established that David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) and John Cree (of Barree Township, PA) were brothers. The evidence comes from family legends of both lines.

Robert H Cree, a descendant of John Cree, has written:

When I was a young boy, my old uncle, Harry W. Cree (1857-1937), often told me that his grandfather, David Cree (1795-1871), had told him many times that his father, John Cree (of Barree Township, PA), was born in County Down, Northern Ireland in the vicinity of Belfast. As a matter of fact, a recent (2005) DNA match confirms the fact that at some point in time, John and David Cree had indeed shared a common ancestor.

Robert H Cree has also researched the line of David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) where the same family story was told:

According to a long standing family tradition, held by some of the older descendants of David Cree, he was born in this country, possibly in New Jersey, and that he was a brother of John Cree of Barree Township, Huntingdon County, Pa.

The Cree yDNA Project has established that there was a close relationship between John and David Cree. They were found to be either brothers or first cousins.3

His daughter Mary Cree was born c 1783 in prob. Barree Twp., Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA.

William Cree William Cree and his wife Mary are probably buried in the Heggarty's Crossroads Cemetery in Beccaria Twp., Clearfield County, Pa. This cemetery was not far from their place of residence and it is known that William was one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church at that place. It is further known that David Cree, younger brother of William is buried in this cemetery.

It has always been an interesting point of conjecture as to why William Cree traveled nearly 250 miles from Clearfield County, Pa. in 1821, no doubt on horseback over primitive wilderness roads, to marry a young widow, Mary Holten Fuller, at Swedesboro, New Jersey. It would be interesting to know the circumstances under which he would have known of her existence and of how his contacts with her over such a great distance would have been sufficient for him to have proposed marriage. It is a known fact that a Holten family had, at an earlier date, settled in that same part of Clearfield County where William Cree's father had settled. It is quite possible that Mary Holten was related in some way to these Holtens who were possible neighbors, or at least acquaintances, of the Crees.

WILL OF WILLIAM CREE

In the name of God Amen, I, William Cree of Beccaria Township, Clearfield County and State of Pennsylvania being sick and weak in body but of sound mind, memory and understanding (praised be God for it) and considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and to the end I may be better prepared to leave this world whenever it shall please God to call me hence, do therefor make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following : that is to say, first and principally, I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God , my Creator, hoping for free pardon of all my sins and to enjoy everlasting happiness in the Heavenly Kingdom through Jesus Christ my Savior, and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried.

I do hereby will that my real property comprising the farm and premises whereon I now reside in Beccaria Township, Clearfield County and State of Pennsylvania with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging shall be sold in the course of the Autumn of the year 1839 for the purpose of paying all my just debts and funeral expenses and the surplus or residue shall be placed in the hands of my family and converting it to their use in the manner following (viz) - I do give and bequeath unto my loving wife Mary all my household furniture, beds and bedding of every description to her sole use and behoof during the term of her natural life, and one cow which shall remain at her disposal. I do hereby will unto my sons David, John and William all my right title and interest to the undivided half of the tract of land in the name of Solomon Lyons purchased by me at Commissioners sale, lying and being in Beccaria Township on the waters of Clearfield Creek, to fall into their possession immediately after my decease. I do hereby will all my live and dead stock, horses, cows &c (except the cow above mentioned), farming implements, gears &c. to their use and behoof to take place immediately after my decease so that they may have the benefit of them without delay and also I hereby most solemnly bind them by every tie of love and duty to support their Mother in everything necessary to her comfort during her natural life provided she does not intermarry but remains a widow, and further I will that the aforesaid David, John and William shall together with their Mother take care of and bring up my son James until he comes of age at 21 years except he should desire and it should be thought advisable for his interest to learn any trade or business that might be judged most profitable and beneficial for him, but if he prefers staying with the family and giving every assistance in his power until he becomes of age, let him do so and they shall give him a horse with eighty dollar saddle and bridal and the sum of one hundred dollars. If he should leave the family and go to a trade at the age of 16 or 17, then the said David, John and William shall be released from the obligation of giving him the horse &c. but shall give the 100 dollars on his coming to age, it is not considered that the Mother is liable to any claim of said James as aforesaid but David, John and William to be responsible. Also, I will that the said David, John and William shall provide for and bring up my daughter Hannah Jane in a proper and comfortable manner until she attains the age of eighteen and then to give her a good bed and bedding and a good cow and household furniture to the amount of twenty five dollars. If David should agree to go to a trade at 17 or 18 years of age, he may go and give up his share in all the property except that John and William pay him one hundred dollars when he is free from the trade. I do hereby constitute and appoint Robert Leonard as Executor to this my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof, I, William Cree, the Testator, have to this my last will set my hand and seal this fifth day of December AD 1838.

William E. Cree In early life, William Cree was a lumberman and shingle maker by trade. In later years, he worked as a farmer, carpenter and teamster. He was killed on October 19, 1893 when thrown from his wagon near the foot of Sixth Street in Huntingdon, Pa.

HUNTINGDON 'JOURNAL' - Friday, October 20, 1893

No sooner had the news of Samuel Hollinghead's death been circulated than another horrible accident occurred. The victim of this accident was Mr. William Cree, residing on the top of Stone Creek hill. Mr. Cree had been hauling dirt from the streets ever since the beginning of the street making. On Thursday afternoon, shortly after one o'clock, Mr. Cree loaded his wagon with earth and drove to the rear of J.C. Blair's stationery establishment where he proceded to deposit it. While he stood on the double-trees dumping the load, a freight train came along which frightened the horses and caused them to run away. Mr. Cree tried to jump off but his feet slipped and he fell under the wagon, which passed over his stomach, killing him instantly. Mr. Cree was aged about 65 years and was a highly respected citizen. He is survived by three children. The funeral services have not yet been announced.

HUNTINGDON 'SEMI-WEEKLY NEWS' - October 19, 1893

At noon today, William E. Cree, an aged farmer who resides on Stone Creek hill, east of town, was fatally injured. He was employed as a teamster on the street work on Penn Street. While unloading dirt at Garrettson's lot along the railroad, his horses frightened at the trains and ran off. He was struck on the temple by the wagon and both wheels run over his body. He was picked up unconscious and carried into Dr. Chisholm's office where he died. He leaves three sons and one daughter.

HUNTINGDON 'GLOBE' - October 19, 1893

James (*) Cree of Henderson Township was instantly killed this Thursday afternoon about 1 o'clock. He was employed on the streets of this place hauling dirt when his horses became frightened at the cars and ran off, throwing him out. The wagon passed over him, crushing his breast. He was taken to Dr. Chisholm's office where he died in about half an hour. (*) should be William Cree
