Sarah A. Troxell The actual date of birth of Sarah A. (Troxell) Craine remains somewhat of a mystery.
The year of her birth as shown on her tombstone in the Asbury Cemetery in Blair County, Pa. is 1849. However, her age as shown on 6 consecutive census records would indicate that she was born in the early to mid 1850s. The 1900 census which is the only one that gives the month and year of a persons birth lists Sarahs birth as occurring in January of 1853. Furthermore, Sarah is not listed with her father's children in the 1850 census which she should have been if she had been born in 1849. Since the birth dates shown in the 1900 census are usually considered more reliable, I have therefore listed her as having been born in January of 1853. David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) was born c 1750. He was the son of Male#2 Cree.
It is uncertain at present (2018) whether David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) was born in the USA or in Ireland.1
It is reasonably well established that David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) and John Cree (of Barree Township, PA) were brothers. The evidence comes from family legends of both lines.
Robert H Cree, a descendant of John Cree, has written:
When I was a young boy, my old uncle, Harry W. Cree (1857-1937), often told me that his grandfather, David Cree (1795-1871), had told him many times that his father, John Cree (of Barree Township, PA), was born in County Down, Northern Ireland in the vicinity of Belfast. Furthermore, John Cree's youngest daughter Anne states in the 1870 Federal Census that her father was foreign born. My uncle Harry Cree also told me that his grandfather told him on numerous occasions that his father John and the David Cree who lived in Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, Pa. were brothers and that they often visited each other while John was still living in Huntingdon County. As a matter of fact, a recent (2005) DNA match confirms the fact that at some point in time, John and David Cree had indeed shared a common ancestor.
Robert H Cree has also researched the line of David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) where the same family story was told:
According to a long standing family tradition, held by some of the older descendants of David Cree, he was born in this country, possibly in New Jersey, and that he was a brother of John Cree of Barree Township, Huntingdon County, Pa.
The Cree yDNA Project has established that there was a close relationship between John and David Cree. They were found to be either brothers or first cousins.2
David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) married Anne Patterson before 1773. Their marriage record has not been found but they were said to have been married when they moved to Dublin Township.
C 1773 David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) and Anne Patterson moved from near Philadelphia and settled at Dublin Township, Pennsylvania, USA.3,4,5
From 1773 to 1810 there are a number of deeds and tax assessments relating to David Cree (of Dublin Township PA) residence in Hamilton Township and Dublin Township, Pennsylvania.6

- [S226] The Cree Families of Pennsylvania, GEDCOM file created by Robert H Cree, 2006, Most of the text that relates to the Cree Families of Pennsylvania is copyright (c) Robert H Cree 2006., "Very little is known about the origins or the early life of David Cree of Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, Pa. According to a long standing family tradition, held by some of the older descendants of David Cree, he was born in this country, possibly in New Jersey, and was a brother of John Cree of Barree Township, Huntingdon County, Pa. However, in the opinion of this writer, it would seem more likely that David Cree was born in County Down in Northern Ireland and that he probably came to this country at an early age with his parents and possibly other family members. If he was not born in Northern Ireland, his parents most certainly would have been born there. As far as is known, all of the other Cree lines that settled in Pennsylvania prior to 1800 originated in Northern Ireland. At this time, the names of David Cree's parents are unknown. Recent DNA tests (2005) of a direct male descendant of David Cree, a direct male descendant of Joseph Cree, an 18th century resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey, and a direct male descendant of John Cree of Barree Twp., Huntingdon County, Pa. indicate a positive DNA match between these three Cree lines. Unfortunately, at the present time, these matches only confirm that at some time in the past, these three Crees shared a common male Cree ancestor. Although there is considerable evidence to suggest that David and John were indeed brothers, there is at this time no documented proof of this relationship. However, it is known that both David and John were living in the same area of Hamilton Twp., Cumberland County, Pa. in 1780 and that they both settled in Huntingdon County about 1783.
At some time during his early years, David's family apparently was living in eastern Pennsylvania, probably in the area west of Philadelphia in what is now Chester County. It is possible that he was married while living at that location. Some time in the 1770s, he moved westward into what was then Hamilton Township, Cumberland County (now Franklin County) at which location some of his older children were born. He is shown in the Hamilton Township tax assessment lists for the years 1778, 1779 and 1780. About 1783, David Cree and his family once again migrated westward a few miles into what is now Dublin Township, Huntingdon County where his younger children were born and where he lived for the remainder of his life. David Cree served as a Dublin township constable in 1792 and as a township supervisor in 1802. Although only two of David Cree's sons ever married, their numerous descendants are now scattered throughout the entire United States." - [S16] Personal communication, Robert H Cree. - [S553] M.S. Lytle, History of Huntingdon County (Lancaster, PA.: William H. Roy, 1876), "David Cree and his wife, from near Philadelphia, settled on a fine tract of limestone land in the southern part of the township (Dublin), owned by Nathan McDowell of Peters Township, Franklin County, from whom they rented, about the year 1783. They paid an annual rent, as appears from the original articles of agreement, of ten pounds. The land was afterwards (1796) bought by Mr. Cree and remained in the possession of his family until a few years ago. Ten children were born to him there and their descendants are among the most respected people in the county. One of the latter is Thomas K. Cree, so well known in connection with the founding of the YMCA. The farm passed into the hands of James Clymans, its present owner and is now one of the best in the county."
- [S226] The Cree Families of Pennsylvania, "The farm was sold by the heirs of David Cree to James Clymans on March 29, 1865. The original log farmhouse was torn down about 1900 and was replaced by the present house. The farm was owned by Alvin Peterson, grandson of James Clymans when visited by the writer in 1962.
David Cree and his wife are buried in unmarked graves but the exact location of these graves is unknown. There is some possibility that they are buried either in the Lower Path Valley Presbyterian Cemetery, Franklin County, where they are known to have worshipped and where their son James is buried or in the cemetery at Burnt Cabins, Fulton County which is the nearest public cemetery to their homestead and which is the burial place of their sons, Jonathon, Robert and David. However, in the opinion of this writer, both David Cree and his wife and possibly their sons John and Alexander are probably buried in a now abandoned small graveyard situated on a hilltop approx. 300 yards west of their homestead farm house. I have been told by local researchers that old time residents of the area often referred to this graveyard as the Old Cree Cemetery. The U.S. Geological Survey Mapping Service also shows this as the Cree Cemetery. Finally, I was told by Alvin Peterson who had inherited the David Cree homestead property that older members of his family had often said that there were Crees buried in this cemetery. This graveyard, which is approx. 50 ft. by 60 ft. in size, is located on or is immediately adjacent to David Cree's original homestead property. At the present time, there are four later dated marble tombstones in this graveyard. However, there are also at least eight and possibly many more unmarked fieldstones marking the location of early burials.
David Cree's son John apparently died at an early age, possibly in infancy, as he is not mentioned in his father's will nor does his name appear in any other Huntingdon County documents. In the 1800 census, David Cree is shown as having 6 sons although we know that he actually had 7 sons. This would suggest that John had died sometime prior to 1800." - [S554] John W Jordan, History of the Juniata Valley and its people (New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Co, 1913), "Dublin township, one of the original six townships within the present limits of the county, was erected in October, 1767... A few land warrants, dated prior to the Revolution, indicate that white men had found a lodgment there, but little is known of the settlers of that period. About 1765 Alexander Blair and his wife Rachel came from Chester county. (David Cree's daughter Jane later married a Blair.)... David Cree brought his family from Philadelphia about 1773... During the decade following 1780 the number of settlers increased rapidly... (David's sons) James, Jonathan and Robert Cree."

Item from the September 2, 1819, Huntingdon Gazette
'On Friday evening of the 6th inst. Mr. Samuel Cree, a respectable citizen of Pymatuming Twp. in this county, was instantaneously killed in his house by lightning. We are informed that Mr. Cree, his wife, two or three children, and a young lady of the neighborhood, were the only persons in the house at the time. Some bread was baking on the fire, to which Mrs. Cree was attending, when Mr. Cree, having a young child in his arms, arose and stepped to the chimney place in order to adjust the fire, it is supposed, when he was struck to the floor lifeless, and the child was not injured. The flash was supposed to have passed down the chimney. Mrs. Cree was also struck and lay apparently lifeless for nearly an hour. No marks were perceivable on Mr. Cree except a very small hole through his hat and into his head, something like that which might be made by a small pigeon shot.

Huntingdon County Will Book No. 5 - Page 377
In the name of God, Amen, I, James Cree of Dublin Township, Huntingdon County and state of Penna., being of sound and disposing mind and memory, thanks be to God for the same, and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain , this my last Will and Testament as follows, viz:
First and principally, I give and commit my soul unto the hands of Almighty God who gave it, and my body I commend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian like manner, at the discretion of my friends or my hereafter mentioned executors and as touching my wordly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with in this life. I dispose of the same as follows, viz: first, it is my will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my estate by my Executors. First, I give and bequeath to my wife, Elizabeth Cree, if she should live longer than me, part of the house that we now live in, and all the goods and moveable property that is in our part of the house, two cows and three sheep - my son, Jonathon Cree, is to pay her thirty dollars yearly as long as she lives, and find her in all things that she wants to live on and pasture and fodder for her cows and sheep, and provide her with firewood cut in proper length for the stove. I will to my son David Cree a Book Account that I hold against him of two hundred and seventy one dollars, and one hundred dollars to be paid to him in cash four years after my death. I will to my son John Cree a Book Account and note that I hold against him to the amount of three hundred and six dollars and fifty dollars to be paid him five years after my death. I will to my son James Cree a Book Account and note that I hold against him to the amount of three hundred and six dollars and fifty dollars to be paid him five years after my death. I will to my son James Cree a Book Account of one hundred and forty four dollars and the sorrel horse and a lot of ground commencing at a gate post east of the cider press, running northwest six perches to a post, thence southwest ten perches to a post, thence southeast six perches to a post, thence northeast ten perches to the place of beginning, including all his buildings. The said James to have the privilege of the spring and spring house loft. The said James to have the stable he now uses and the one half of the carriage house. Said James to have a piece of land laid off the farm I now live on, say ten acres more or less, the place of beginning at the end of the lane on the line of Thos. W. Neeley, thence down the lane to the large sugar tree, thence across the meadow running parallel with the said Neeley line. The said James to have one half of a mountain tract of land I own adjoining lands of Thomas W. Neeley and John Finley, to him and his heirs forever. I will to my son Walker Cree a Book Account and note that I hold against him to the amount of two hundred and sixty six dollars and a hundred dollars to be paid to him three years after my death. I will to my daughter, Eliza Blair, a Book Account that I hold against her of one hundred dollars and fifty dollars to be paid to her one year after my death. I will to my daughter, Ann Walker, a Book Account that I hold against her of one hundred and twenty three dollars and one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid her two years after my death. I will to my grandsons now living ten dollars each when they become of age. I will to all my grand daughters five dollars each when they become of age.
I will to my son Jonathon Cree the farm that I now live on with the exception of the small lots bequeathed to my son James. I give to my son Jonathon all the mountain land that I now own except what I bequeathed to my son James, to have and to hold forever to him and his heirs. By complying to pay all the foregoing lagacies and bequests that I have mentioned in this Will that is not already paid, Jonathon is to have all the stoves in the house except the cook stove in the part of the house in which I now live in. If any of my grand children should die before they receive the legacy I left them, then it is to be divided equally among brothers and sisters.
