Hettie Cripe
Female, CreeID#5595, (10 July 1853 - 5 November 1927)
Charts | Line 17. The Perth glovers line Branch 21b. The David Cree branch of PA |
Hettie Cripe was born on 10 July 1853.1 She was the daughter of Elias Cripe and Barbara Myers.
Hettie Cripe married Samuel Walker Cree Jr, son of Samuel Walker Cree and Elizabeth Welsh, on 5 November 1917 in Carroll County, Indiana, USA. Janet Hall writes:
Hester "Hettie" CRIPE... married four times:
#1 Benjamin Johnson on 13 Nov 1873. he died 22 Mar 1895
#2 William L. Britsch on 19 Feb 1898, he died sometime before 1913
#3 John Replogle m 15 Mar 1913; he died 1915
#4 Samuel W. Cree 5 Nov 1917.
These families, which I have studied for years, were mostly Dunkard Brethren, whose church fathers encouraged widows and widowers to remarry even into their 80s. Double and even triple marriages were very common, and sometimes in-laws married one another, generally after child-bearing age, but it is a challenge to sort them all out. Samuel's first Cripe wife was probably related to his last Cripe wife, Hetty... I have not previously had her Samuel CREE husband linked up to the major CREE lines, but have assumed from your site that you know which Samuel CREE married her. I had discounted this before, as Samuel's wife Mary E. Cripe died in N. Dakota, but apparently he returned to Indiana and married again. Many settlers returned from the harsh conditions on the frontier especially in their later years...1
Her husband Samuel Walker Cree Jr died on 15 January 1919 in Flora, Carroll County, Indiana, USA.
Hettie Cripe died on 5 November 1927 in her home, Flora, Carroll County, Indiana, USA.2 She was buried on 6 November 1927 in Musselman Cemetery, Flora, Carroll County, Indiana, USA.2
WELL KNOWN FLORA LADY IS BECKONED TO HER REWARD
Hetty CREE, daughter of Elias and Barbara [MYERS] CRIPE, was born July 10, 1853, died at her home in Flora, November 5, 1927, at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 25 days. The most of her life had been spent in and around Flora. On November 17, 1873, she was united in marriage to Benjamin F. JOHNSON, of Flora, Ind., who preceded her in death on March 22, 1895. To this union were born six children; Mrs. Ida McKEEVER of Sunnyside, Wash; Jesse, living near Flora; Charley, who died at the age of five; Bertie E., who died in 1920; Mrs. Blanche JEFFRIES, of Walla Walla, Wash., and Howard Monroe, residing in Logansport. There remain thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two brothers, John CRIPE of Flora and Moses CRIPE, living in Missouri, and one sister, Mrs. Anna FLORA of Rockfield, also other relatives.
She always enjoyed a large group of friends. She was a kind and loving mother and much concerned about her children. She was cheerful and of a kindly disposition, always passing a pleasant word and look, with a smile, on to others. She lived a consistent Christian life and was a member of the Church of the Brethren. A loss is marked in the family, community and church, but she has gained and her gain is our consolation.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Church of the Brethren, the pastor, Rev. A. P. Musselman officiating. Interment was made in the Musselman cemetery.2
