Ebenezer Hall Jr1

Male, CreeID#6208, (1734 - 1813)
Ebenezer's father, who was killed by the Indians in 1757, according to Lincoln County Records, on 4 November 1755, less than two years before his death, deeded to his son Ebenezer his schooner named "Chance," twenty-five head of cattle, houses, goods, chattels, etc. situated on the Island of Matinicus. At the time of his father's death, he was absent on a fishing trip. Upon his return, he found the house and property destroyed or stolen and the family gone. He proceeded to Boston with his fish, and on the way, he put into Old York for a harbor. While there, he became acquainted with Susannah Young, whom he married
a short time later. They lived at Pemaquid for a few years. Ebenezer, or his father, had been at Pemaquid prior to 1763. In Documentary History of the State of Maine, Volume 3, p. 71, by James Phinney Baxter, is a deposition by Ebenezer
Hall dated 22 April 1757 which refers to when he was at Pemaquid in the latter end of the year 1754. In 1763, he moved to Matinicus, with several small children, and took up the inheritance.

In addition to holding property on Matinicus, in 1767 he purchased "Wooden Ball," an island, plus 8.5 sheep, and between 1799 and 1802 he bought and sold land on Ragged Island (Criehaven). The cemetery records show that Ebenezer died on 14 Feb. 1814 at the age of 78 yrs. 11 mos. 1 day.2 Ebenezer Hall Jr was born in 1734.3 He was the son of Ebenezer Hall and Hannah Hall (married name).

His father Ebenezer Hall died on 6 June 1757 in Matinicus Island, Knox County, Maine, USA.4,3

Ebenezer Hall Jr married Susannah Young on 27 September 1758 in York, York County, Maine, USA. They had fifteen children.2

His daughter Mary Hall was born on 25 August 1761 in Pemaquid, Lincoln County, Maine, USA.5

Ebenezer Hall Jr returned to the island of Matinicus five years after the massacre in which his father was killed. That would be in 1762.3

His daughter Jane Hall was born on 4 March 1765 in Matinicus Island, Maine, USA.2

His son George Washington Hall was born on 3 May 1783 in Matinicus Island, Maine.

Ebenezer Hall Jr died in 1813.3

Ebenezer Hall

Male, CreeID#6209, (1704/5 - 6 June 1757)
Ebenezer Hall was born in 1704/5 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA.1

Ebenezer Hall married Hannah Hall (married name) c 1729 in Falmouth, Lincoln County, Maine, USA.1

His son Ebenezer Hall Jr was born in 1734.2

Ebenezer Hall died on 6 June 1757 in Matinicus Island, Knox County, Maine, USA. McLane states that Ebenezer Hall was the first white settler on Matinicus Island and that he was killed there on 6 June 1757.

Ebenezer Hall and the Native Americans came to an agreement that he could farm Matinicus but that he wouldn't burn the fields of the adjacent islands. (In the 18th Century, fire was used to clear land for farming.) When Hall decided to burn the adjacent islands anyway the Native Americans first went to the Royal Authorities in Boston and when Hall ignored them, the Indians killed him on June 10, 1757. Hall is buried in the vicinity of the so-called "store well." A historical marker bolted to a ledge states that Hall was "killed by the Indians" on this date.3,2

Lillian married Fred Rollins and their daughter, Katherine, was my paternal grandmother... My grandmother (Lillian's daughter) often spoke of her Crie family and of Criehaven, though at the time I was too young to ask if she had ever been! From other history I've found about Criehaven, the 'other' side of the Crie family lived much longer on the island, through several more generations after Lillian was born.

There is also a history of Cries on the nearby island of Matinicus. That is the island the Cries first landed on when they came to the U.S. From there they moved across the channel to Criehaven, and at one point in about 1879 owned the whole island! Mary Jane's uncle, John Crie (born 1788, married to Sally Emery) had 7 children, most of whom I can find seemed to stay on the island. Of course most were fishermen, one owned and ran a general store, one was the postmaster and a grandson was even Commissioner of Sea Fisheries.2 Mary Jane Crie was born on 5 January 1835 in Owls Head, Knox County, Maine, USA. Bjarni Brown wrote, "Mary Jane Crie's place of birth is Owl's Head, Maine (which is on the mainland, not the island of Criehaven) but it was common for the women to make the trip 'off island' to have their babies."

Robert Hall's geneaolgy, however, has her birth place as Matinicus.1,3,4 She was the daughter of Ebenezer Crie and Sally Burgess.1
