James Crie (of Ballybuttle)
Male, CreeID#6882, (1647 - )
Charts | Line 17. The Perth glovers line Chart 1306 Perth glovers Mini-chart 6882 Ballybuttle Mini-chart 6882 A first County Down Cree family |
James Crie (of Ballybuttle) was born in 1647. He was the son of Harrie Crie and Agnes Lamb. James Crie (of Ballybuttle) was baptised on 4 July 1647 in Perth, Scotland. The father's first name was spelt "Hearie". Witnesses were Jon Lamb and James Crie.1
James Crie (of Ballybuttle) was the father of five, six or possibly more individuals born in County Down between 1675 and about 1692. The townland of Ballybuttle is adjacent to Millisle (Ballymacruise townland) and quite close to Donaghadee where his wife Christian Barclay was buried.
It has been conjectured for some time that James Crie, the son of Harrie Crie and Agnes Lamb of Perth, Scotland, is the same person as James Crie (of Ballybuttle) whose wife Christian Barclay was buried in Donaghadee, Ireland. This conjecture is now supported by YDNA test results which show that Trevor Cree, a descendant of James Crie (of Ballybuttle) through Robert Cree of Newtownards, Co. Down), is related to descendants of the of the Perth Burgesses whose ancestors have not lived in Ireland. This makes the conjecture closer to certainty. There is still room for doubt of course as 100% certainty is not possible at this distarnce of time.
James Crie (of Ballybuttle) married Christian Barclay. No records of children of this marriage have been found. It is not suggested that Christian Barclay was the mother of John Cree of Millisle, since she died before his birth. If she and James Crie had children, it would have been likely that he remarried soon after her death at age 27. The second wife could then be the mother of John Cree and possibly of David and James Cree.2
In 1674 James Crie (of Ballybuttle) and Christian Barclay were living in Ballybuttle, Donaghadee parish, County Down, England.2 Christian Barclay was buried in the parish churchyard, Donaghadee, County Down, Ireland. Her tombstone reads, "Here lyeth the bodie of Cresten Barklai wife to Iames Crie of Beliebvtl [Ballybuttle near Millisle] who deceased the 13 day of Ianvarie Anno. Dom. 1674 and of her age the 27 year. Also hear is ..."
Of significance here is the spelling of the surname as CRIE. It is the only known occurrence of this spelling in Ireland, although it was the standard spelling of the surname in Scotland at that period. The name Christian was a common Scots girls' name of the period, not often found amongst the later County Down people of Scots descent. The spelling Cristen is also unusual but is known from another Cristen Barcley who was married in Fife, Scotland in 1647. These spellings would seem to link James and Christian more closely with Scotland than any other Cree that we have found in County Down.
As Christian has died at age 27, it is likely that the fragment "Also hear is..." refers to a child. The most common cause of death amongst women of that age was childbirth and the child would often die too.3
James Crie (of Ballybuttle) married 2nd wife Cree after 15 January 1674.
His son John Cree was born in 1675 or 1676.4
His son David Cree was born in 1680.
His son James Cree was born in 1683.5
His daughter Esther Cree was born in 1688 or 1689.
His son Robert Cree (of Newtownards, Co. Down) was born in 1692 or 1693.6
His daughter (Female) Cree was born c 1693 in Ireland.

Christian Barclay was also known as Cresten Barklai. This is the version on her gravestone. The other spelling is my interpretation. However the letter 'e' was at that period pronounced 'ee' so this is closer to the English Christine than to the Scots girls' name Christian.1 She was born in 1646 or 1647. (It is possible that she was the Barclay baptised in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, on 22 March 1646. There is no proof of the relationship.)2
Christian Barclay married James Crie (of Ballybuttle), son of Harrie Crie and Agnes Lamb. No records of children of this marriage have been found.
