Maria Ann Thompson was born in 1875 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. (This is the more likely of two possible birth records for Maria.)1 She was the daughter of George John Thompson. Her married name was Cree.2,3
Maria Ann Thompson married James William Cree, son of John Cree and Susan Scammell Denslow, on 18 August 1893 in Holy Trinity Church, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.2,3
Her son John James Cree was born in 1894 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.2,4
In 1910 Maria Ann Thompson was living in 158 Castlereagh Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, along with John James Cree. Maria was part owner of supper rooms at this address and she and Jack lived on the premises.2
"Jack" had been stealing from his mother and keeping bad company so Maria asked the Children's Court to send him away. He was on the "Sobraon", an all-boy industrial training and reformatory ship, from February 1910 until July 1910 and his mother contributed money towards his maintenance. The entrance books for the "Vernon" and "Sobraon" give a lot of information about "Jack".5 Maria Ann Thompson filed for divorce from James William Cree in 1914 on the grounds of desertion but the petition was "dismissed because of lack of domicile".6
