William was 51 and a wool broker and commission agent. Isabella was 47. All eight of their surviving chidren were at home and all except the two youngest, Patrick and Jessie, were scholars. Wlhelmina, aged 29, was Isabella's sister and a visitor to the household. There were also two servants.1

Charles was a farm servant aged 75, Mary A Chapman, a widow and housekeeper aged 47, and Elizabeth E Chapman her daughter, aged 13. They were all born in Bredhurst which is some 30 miles (50 km) away. Wickhambreux is about 2 miles (3 km) from Fordwich.3
