It has been suggested that James Cree may be the same person as James Cree from Manchester, Lancashire, England. The latter was born in Scotland. He was born on 20 April 1817 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. It is puzzling that James's birth record shows his mother's name as Janet Brand. She is named at her marriage and death as Isobel Brand. There are separate baptism records for Janet and Isobel.1,2 He was the son of John Cree and Isobel Brand.

James Cree married Jane Fogg on 28 May 1837 in St Mary, Bury, Lancashire, England.3

His daughter Isabella Cree was born c May 1839 in Leigh Reg Dist, Lancashire, England.4

His son John Henry Brand Cree was born on 20 August 1840 in Leigh Reg Dist, Lancashire.5,6

James Cree was a silk manufacturer on 25 December 1840 in Manchester, Lancashire.7

On 6 June 1841 James Cree and Jane Fogg were living in Union Street, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England, along with John Henry Brand Cree. James was aged 20 to 24 and was a silk manufacturer born in Scotland. Jane was 20 to 29, while John was 9 months old.8

Isabella was 27 with no occupation recorded. Alsi in the house were two of Jane's nieces, Margaret and Mary Selby aged 16 and 12. Margaret was born on Leigh but Mary was born in Moscow, Russia.14

On 3 April 1881 Jane Fogg was living in 66 Bond Street, Pennington, Leigh, Lancashire, along with Isabella Jane Cree and James Brand Cree. Jane was now 66 and Isabella 36. They each had "no occupation." James was described as married (although this may be an error), aged 29 and a civil engineer.15

Jane Fogg died c February 1886 in Leigh, Lancashire.16
