Charts | Line 17. The Perth glovers line Chart 1306 Perth glovers Mini-chart 6882 Ballybuttle Mini-chart 6882 A first County Down Cree family Mini-chart 11612 Migrants to USA |
Documentary evidence suggests that the Cree families of Northern Ireland are descended from Scottish Cree ancestors.
YDNA tests of descendants of the Scottish lines show that they are all closely related to each other through a common male-line ancestor born before 1700. They include two lines with descendannts in England whose documented ancestry shows that their ancestors lived in Down, Ireland, and must therefore have migrated from Scotland to Ireland and from there to England.
There are many Cree lines in the USA of which four groups, three from Pennsylvania and one from New Jersey, have been shown by YDNA test to be closely related.
Y-DNA testing has established that the Pennsylvania-New Jersey (PA-NJ) lines tested are closely related to each ohter through a common male-line ancestor in the 1700s. This common ancestor is thought to be the father of four sons named below, but we do not know his name and have called him "(Male) non-Cree".
(Male) non-Cree is postulaed as the father of all four sons listed here who are known through documented research to be the progenitors of four Cree lines in Pennsylvania and New Jersey (PA/NJ). All except the NJ progenitor can be shown to have been born in Ireland in the mid-1700s, Since YDNA tests have shown the NY progenitor to be closely related to the three PA ones, he too must be from Ireland.
It is suggested that the four sons of (Male) non-Creeook their surname from their mother, a Cree, and that she was (Male) non-Cree's unmarried partner.
However no member of the Scotland and Scots-Irish lines has a close match to any member of the Irish-American PA-NJ lines group. This was a surprise. There might be several explanations for this. The most likely one is that the migrants from County Down to the USA were decsended from a single ancestor in County Down who acquired the surname through a "non-paternal event" or NPE. In other words he was known by the surname Cree and passed it on to his children but his biological father was not a Cree.
It seems highly likley that it was (Male) non-Cree who acquired the name Cree though a non-paternal event. This could be that he was the son of the "Unknown 2nd wife" of James Crie of Ballybuttle. She may have had a son fathered by someone other than her husband, either adulterously or as a widow. In either case it woukld be likely that her son was given the surname Cree, especially if she did not reveal the father's identity. The son's children would then be named Cree but their relationshiop to their Cree cousins woukld not be revealed by YDNA tests. He was born c 1690. He and (Female) Cree were partners from c 1720.
His son Male#2 Cree was born c 1720?
His son Male#1 Cree was born c 1720?
His son Robert Cree Sr (of Cumberland Township, PA) was born c 1729? In County Down, Ireland.
His son Male#3 Cree was born c 1732?
