He was the first to describe the 27-day pulse in magnetic phenomena, "that if any day were considerably more [geomagnetically] disturbed than the average day of the month, then the day 27 days subsequent to it was likely to be also more disturbed than usual." In addition to its meteorological implications, his work also had practical implications for land surveying using magnetic needles.

On 2 April 1871 John Smith Chree was living in the household of Amelia Margaret Carter in Norwood, Hayes, Middlesex. Amelia was 66 and had "no occupation" while her son James was a clerk aged 27.3

John Smith Chree married Elizabeth Raskin, daughter of Richard Raskin, c August 1873 in Brentford Reg Dist, Middlesex, England.4

His daughter Eleanor Elizabeth Chree was born c February 1874 in Southall, Middlesex, England.5

His son Clarence John Chree was born c February 1874 in Southall, Middlesex.5
