- [S419] Website, NNDB, http://www.nndb.com/people/824/000168320/, Charles Chree made significant contributions to the mathematical theory of elasticity, and studied geomagnetism, pointing out daily and annual variations and showing that terrestrial magnetic phenomena are linked to sunspots and other meteorological conditions. He was the first to describe the 27-day pulse in magnetic phenomena, "that if any day were considerably more [geomagnetically] disturbed than the average day of the month, then the day 27 days subsequent to it was likely to be also more disturbed than usual." In addition to its meteorological implications, his work also had practical implications for land surveying using magnetic needles.
