ChartsLine 17. The Newtownards line
Mini-chart 6275 Ballybarnes
Wm Cree. Born in the Townland of Ballybearns, County Down, Ireland April 5, 1821. Died September 6, 1873
William Cree was born on 5 April 1821 in Ballybearns, Newtownards parish, County Down, Ireland.1 He was the son of Joseph Cree and Mary Cree (married name).

In 1853 William Cree moved from Ireland and settled at Portland, Oregon, USA.2

William Cree married Margaret Phelan in 1858 in Portland, Oregon. Margaret (named as Mary in the source) was 17 years old.3

His father Joseph Cree died on 28 January 1867 in Ballybarnes, Newtownards, County Down, Ireland.4,5

His mother Mary Cree (married name) died on 17 August 1867 in Ballybarnes, Newtownards parish, County Down, England.6

William Cree was a retired merchant in 1870. His real estate was valued at $50,000 and apart from his wife Margaret, an Ellen J Failing (17 years) was residing within the household. It turns out that Ellen was actually the sister of William's wife, Margaret. Margaret Cree died in Portland on the 4 October 1891. (We presume that Ellen's surname was in fact Phelan as she was later described as William's sister-in-law.)7

William Cree was a speculator in 1873 in between Third and Fourth, Morrison, Oregon, USA.8

William Cree died on 6 September 1873 in Portland, Oregon.9 He was buried on 7 September 1873 in Lone Fir Cemetery, Portland, Oregon, USA. The funeral service took place at the First Presbyterian Church in Portland.10 Probate of William Cree's will was granted to Margaret Phelan on 10 September 1873 in Multnomah County, Oregon, USA. He left in excess of $37,000 and apart from his widow Margaret he left legacies for his brothers and sisters... Robert Cree, Samuel Cree, Esther Ray, Mary Murdoch, Nancy Caswell and Betsy Shaw. Through these names we can identify that William Cree was a son of Joseph Cree of Ballybarnes (Cree ID 6275) who died on the 30 January 1867. We know that Mary Cree married William Murdoch in 1853, Elizabeth (Betsy) Cree firstly married William Ferguson in 1857 and after his death Robert Shaw. Nancy (Ann) Cree must surely be the sister also known as Agnes. However we had no record of Esther Cree marrying a Ray and have now found a reference to Easter Cree and her husband William Roy.11

Family: William Cree and Margaret Phelan

I have found that even today there are people who equate "Irish" with "Cathoklic". an unknown person was almost certainly a Presbyterian., The same group of founding Irish mothers and fathers in Portland included men who became influential in the government of the city in the next quarter-century. William Cree, who married 17 year old Mary Pheelan in 1858, a decade later became a Democratic leader and the first Irish-born city councilman in a county political system thoroughly ruled by Protestant Republicans.

Mr. Cree had been in quite poor health for some weeks... There are but few men who have resided as long in Portland, or whose interests have been so nearly allied and identified with the growth and prosperity of the city as Mr. Cree. He has long been among the most enterprising and estimable of our citizens. Mr. Cree came to Portland in 1853 and has resided here ever since. For many years he was engaged in business until the accumulations of his industry and the increased value of property yielded him a handsome income and placed him in independent circumstances. Mr. Cree also represented the First Ward in the City Council for three years."

Margaret Phelan

ChartsLine 17. The Newtownards line
Mini-chart 6275 Ballybarnes
Margaret Phelan was born in 1840 or 1841.1

Margaret Phelan married William Cree, son of Joseph Cree and Mary Cree (married name), in 1858 in Portland, Oregon, USA. Margaret (named as Mary in the source) was 17 years old.2

Her husband William Cree died on 6 September 1873 in Portland, Oregon.3 Probate of William Cree's will was granted to Margaret Phelan on 10 September 1873 in Multnomah County, Oregon, USA. However we had no record of Esther Cree marrying a Ray and have now found a reference to Easter Cree and her husband William Roy.4

Margaret Phelan died on 4 October 1891 in Multnomah County, Oregon.5

Family: Margaret Phelan and William Cree
