John was a tailor. Mary's occupation was "Tailers (sic) wife." William Cree's age was given as one month.

Edwin Haywood was shown as a journeyman tailor aged 26. William Frogatt was shown as aged 60, a lodger, a widower and a farm labourer. He was Mary's father and so should have been shown as John's "father-in-law." He was actually 56. There were a young house servant Eve Wild aged 14 and two other lodgers there on Census Night.4

His father John Cree died on 5 April 1854 in Palterton, Scarcliffe parish, Derbyshire.

Herbert Cree

Male, CreeID#168, (before 7 April 1854 - 31 August 1917)
His father John Cree died on 5 April 1854 in Palterton, Scarcliffe parish, Derbyshire, England. Herbert Cree was born before 7 April 1854 in Palterton, Scarcliffe parish, Derbyshire.1 He was the son of John Cree and Mary Robinson. Herbert Cree was baptised on 15 April 1854 in Scarcliffe parish, Derbyshire, England. Residence is noted as Palterton.2 He was also recorded as born on 23 April 1854. This is clearly incorrect as he had been baptised on 15 April. (His mother signed with her mark. His father had died on 5 April.)3

On 7 April 1861 Herbert Cree was living in the household of Edwin Haywood and Mary Robinson in Palterton, Scarcliffe parish, Derbyshire, along with John Cree, William Frogatt and Anne Spray. Edwin was described as a tailor and beerhousekeeper aged 34. Mary his wife was 41 and a shopkeeper. Mary's sons by her first husband, John aged 12 and Herbert Creee aged 7, were scholars. Also living in the household were Mary's father, William Froggatt aged 64, who is described as Edwin's father-in-law and a widower, and Anne Allen aged 69, described simply as a visitor who was in fact the mother of Mary's first husband John Cree (and therefore grandmother of John and Herbert Cree.)4

On 7 April 1861 Herbert Cree was living in Palterton, Scarcliffe parish, Derbyshire.5

His mother Mary Robinson died on 18 November 1868 in Palterton, Scarcliffe parish, Derbyshire.

On 2 April 1871 Herbert Cree was living in But Lane, Warsop, Nottinghamshire, England. He was described as a tailor aged 16 living in the household of Samuel Renshaw, a tailor and draper. There were two other tailors in the household, Samauel Renshaw's son John, aged 22, and a 17 year old. We might assume that the latter was an apprentice along with Herbert Cree.6 He was a witness at the marriage of Mary Barnes and Joseph Cree on 22 August 1876 in Wesleyan Chapel, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.7 Herbert Creeappeared in the 1881 census in 35 Beetwell Street, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. He was a tailor, boarding in the household of Hannah Lomas, a seamstress and widow of 66. A lodger in the house, Louis Gurtes, was a tailor's machinist from "Brisk, Poland, Russia."8 He was a witness at the marriage of John Pratt and Charlotte Handby on 27 December 1881 in the church of St Paul, Hasland, Derbyshire, England; John was a schoolmaster of Lower York Street, and Charlotte was of Hasland. John's father William Pratt, was a nurseryman.9

Herbert Cree married Ann Handby, daughter of Joseph Handby and Charlotte Wragg, on 21 August 1882 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England.10

His daughter Charlotte Cree was born c February 1884 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.11

His daughter Charlotte Cree died c May 1884 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.12

Herbert Cree was a journeyman tailor in 1887 in 26 Victoria Street, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.13

His daughter Edith Annie Cree was born on 1 May 1887 in 26 Victoria Street, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.14

His son Sidney Herbert Cree was born on 6 December 1889 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.15

His son John Edgar Cree was born on 2 April 1892 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.16
