His father John Cree died c November 1880 in Auckland Reg Dist, County Durham.3
On 3 April 1881 John Newton Cree was living in the household of Jane Jackson in 39 Edward Street, Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. Jane Cree was a washerwoman aged 50 and widowed. John was shown as her son aged 18 and an apprentice joiner. He was in fact her stepson.4
John Newton Cree arrived in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, on 19 July 1883. He had sailed from Glasgow on board the Oban Bay. His name was recorded as J N Cree and his age as 21.5
John Newton Cree married Elizabeth Ann Smith, daughter of Cuthbert Smith and Alice Ellan, on 27 August 1892 in Queensland, Australia.6
