So, although not blood related but related in every other way, my great grandparents James and Janet were first cousins.7

On 3 April 1881 Margaret Slaven and David Cree were living in 16 Keydon Street, Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland, along with Crawford Hill Cree, Hugh Cree, John Cree and Maggie Slaven Cree. David was a pawnbroking manager aged 38 and his wife Maggie was aged 36. David's brother Crawford was at 15 Keydan St, Kinning Park, Glasgow, which may have been very close.6

John Newton Cree

John Newton Cree was born on 29 April 1863 in Auckland St Andrew, County Durham, England.1 He was the son of John Cree and Sarah Newton.

His mother Sarah Newton died c February 1867 in Auckland Reg Dist, County Durham, England.2

His father John Cree died c November 1880 in Auckland Reg Dist, County Durham.3

On 3 April 1881 John Newton Cree was living in the household of Jane Jackson in 39 Edward Street, Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. Jane Cree was a washerwoman aged 50 and widowed. John was shown as her son aged 18 and an apprentice joiner. He was in fact her stepson.4

John Newton Cree arrived in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, on 19 July 1883. He had sailed from Glasgow on board the Oban Bay. His name was recorded as J N Cree and his age as 21.5

John Newton Cree married Elizabeth Ann Smith, daughter of Cuthbert Smith and Alice Ellan, on 27 August 1892 in Queensland, Australia.6

John Newton Cree was a carpenter on 13 July 1896 in 33, Childers Mill, Apple Tree Creek, Childers, Queensland, Australia.7

On 31 March 1901 John Newton Cree and Elizabeth Ann Smith were living in 51 Silk Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. John was aged 37 and a foreman erecting colliery machinery. Elizabeth Ann was aged 32 and shown as his wife. He was born Bishop Auckland, and she at Spennymoor, both places in County Durham. They had two lodgers who were both above-ground colliery joiners.8

His wife Elizabeth Ann Smith died c November 1902 in Nottingham Reg Dist, England.9

John Newton Cree married Esther Mossom Blanchard, daughter of William Thomas Blanchard, c August 1903 in Auckland Reg Dist, County Durham. She marriad as Esther Mossum Blanchard and he as John Newton Cree.10

His daughter Adelaide Cree was born c May 1904 in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England.11,12

His son Sidney Cree was born on 24 February 1906 in Bishop Auckland, County Durham.13,11,14

His daughter Dora Cree was born c February 1908 in Bishop Auckland, County Durham.11,15

On 2 April 1911 John Newton Cree and Esther Mossom Blanchard were living in 64 Bondgate, Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England, along with Adelaide Cree, Sidney Cree and Dora Cree. John was aged 47 and Esther 37. He was a fish dealer. Adelaide was 7, Sidney 5 and Dora 3. Esther's birth place was shown as Bishop Auckland.11

His daughter Ethel Cree was born c August 1911 in Auckland Reg Dist, County Durham.16

When Esther and the children sailed to Australia on the Norseman in September 1912, it seems that John did not travel with them although he must have travelled to Queensland at about the same time as he appears there in 1913. It was his second voyage there.

John Newton Cree was a carpenter in 1913 in Merton Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.17

In 1913 John Newton Cree and Esther Mossom Blanchard were living in Hamilton Road, Moorooka, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Their children were too young to be shown on an electoral roll.17

In 1925 John Newton Cree and Esther Mossom Blanchard were living in Holme Street, Moorooka, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, along with Adelaide Cree. John was a carpenter, Adelaide was a teacher and Hester's occupation was "home duties.17

In 1937 John Newton Cree and Esther Mossom Blanchard were living in Holme Street, Moorooka, Brisbane, Queensland, along with Sidney Cree. John was a carpenter and Sydney (sic) a labourer. Hester was engaged in "home duties."17

John Newton Cree died on 10 August 1937 in Queensland.18,19 He was buried on 12 August 1937 in South Brisbane Cemetery Part B Portion U, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.20,21
