Nicholas Cree (of Topsfield, MA)
Male, CreeID#3507, (c 1690? - June 1746)
Charts | Line 6. The Massachusetts line |
It has been suggested that Nicholas Cree (of Topsfield, MA), progenitor of the Cree line of Topsfield, Massachusetts, may be the same person as Nicholas Cry from Jurby, Isle of Man. Nicholas Cree (of Topsfield, MA) was born c 1690?.
The question many people have asked is this... Where did Nicholas Cree come from? Lists and other records of Cree events world-wide are amazingly short of anyone called Nicholas. However I believe I have located someone who, in the absence of other candidates, must be a strong possibility of being Nicholas Cree of Topsfield. He is Nicholas CRY, baptised on 9 October 1690, at the parish of Jurby in the Isle of Man. From the IGI records it seems that Nicholas CRY is one of about eight children who were born between 1681 and 1700 to parents William CRY and Jean/Jane CHRISTIAN. Nicholas is about the right age to be married in 1723 - a little above average at 32 I know - but perhaps there was a scarcity of brides in the Isle of Man and he took a few years to decide to migrate!
The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea about equidistant from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. I had previously considered whether the names CRY and CRYE were spelling variants of CREE. (They are clearly variants of each other, CRY being the earlier spelling and CRYE the later.) There was no evidence either way so the issue was undecided. These spellings occur almost exclusively in the Isle of Man. There are a few occurrences also in Liverpool, England which is the main port connecting to the Isle of Man. The spelling CRY also occurs in the Dromore area of County Down, Ireland, which is a short distance to the west of the main area occupied by CREE families in that county. I do not even know how the name CRY is or was pronounced.
Can anyone take us any further with this potential link?
[Mike Spathaky, May 2006]
The Family Search web site now includes a Joannes Nicolaus Christophorus Kray (or John Nicolas Christopher KRAY) born on 11 Jan 1689 at St. Ignaz, Mainz, Hessen, Germany. He must be an equally likely candidate to be Nicolas of Topsfield (compared to the above Nicholas CRY). His parents were Pater and Maria Kunigundis. I am uncertain whether Kunigindis is a forename or surname here. It is known as a forename in German-speaking countries. Saint Kunigunde was the wife of Holy Roman Emperor Henry II.
[Mike Spathaky, January 2013]
His son John Cree was born in 1722.1
Nicholas Cree (of Topsfield, MA) married Keziah Dwinell, daughter of John Dunnell and Mary Read, on 7 October 1723 in Topsfield, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. The marriage was also recorded at Marblehead, Essex County.2
His son Richard Cree was baptised on 13 August 1727 in Topsfield, Essex County, Massachusetts.
His daughter Mary Cree was born after 1729.3
His daughter Mary Creed died on 29 January 1728/29 in USA.4
His daughter Jerusha Creed died on 4 February 1728/29.5
His child (unnamed) Cree died on 21 April 1733.6
His son Samuel Cree was born in 1742 in Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA.7,8
Nicholas Cree (of Topsfield, MA) died in June 1746 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Gary Maher writes, "There is a bit of information on this family in the History of Topsfield, but it mostly deals with their military service. Nicholas apparently died or was killed while participating in the French and Indian War at Cape Breton in June of 1746." MS notes: However the French and Indian War (or Seven Years' War) was from 1754 to 1763. Maybe the date should be 1756 though the main events of the war in Cape Breton were a couple of years after this.9,10

He told me that his ancestor changed his name from Cree to Creed and that he is from the Topsfield, Massachusetts, Cree family. Sure enough, he is absolutely right. Thomas Gleason Cree, most likely a son of Stephen Cree and Hannah Smith, changed his surname to Creed, probably in the 1840's. His children did as well, and sons Ivers and Moses both had issue. Donald is a male descendant of the Topsfield Cree family..."

Thomas Jefferson Cree
Male, CreeID#3546, (28 October 1806 - 9 November 1880)
Charts | Line 6. The Massachusetts line |
Thomas Jefferson Cree was born on 28 October 1806 in New Boston, Hillsboro, New Hampshire, USA. In 1852 Thomas wrote, "I am American born 46 years of age next October." Rachel Cree now confirms this with exact date. The Vermont Book of Days also states, "Thomas Jefferson Cree was born on this day [28 October] in 1806."1,2,3,4 He was the son of Moses Cree and Patty Dennis.1
Thomas Jefferson Cree married Anna Stone on 1 January 1834 in Cabot, Caledonia, Vermont, USA. "When he was 27 years old he married Ann Stone of Cabot and moved to Wheelock. Cree was a carpenter and joiner, which were skills that came in handy as he set about building his bride a new home."3,4
Thomas Jefferson Cree was a carpenter and joiner... Among his many jobs, Cree was town moderator, lister, town treasurer and town agent. Cree represented Wheelock in the Legislature, both in the house, and later in the senate Cree was also a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1857. from 1834 to 1880 in Wheelock, Vermont, USA.4
From 1834 to 1880 Thomas Jefferson Cree was living in Wheelock, Vermont.5,6
His son Stephen Gilman Cree was born on 6 December 1834 in Vermont, USA.2
His mother Patty Dennis died on 1 April 1838 in Vermont.7
Rachel Cree Sherman wrote, "George Washington [Cree] (21 Jan 1816 - 9 Nov. 1859) and Luther [Cree] (21 Aug 1820 - 28 Jan 1899) both worked as traveling agents for the Fairbanks Scale Company, which was located in St. Johnsbury. They settled in Montpelier, Vermont's capital city, five doors away from each other. They also made shoes and boots in Wheelock, perhaps carrying on their father's business, though I had no idea until your letter, that their father might have been a shoemaker, carrying on his father's craft, as was so common at that time."
Later Rachel wrote, "George had such a great sense of humor. He and Luther were always at Jefferson because they were of different political parties and were always begging him to 'get out of Wheelock' (a very small town) and move to Montpelier (the capital of the state). They were very active in town/state government. Jefferson was, as well, represented Wheelock in the state legislature (as did my mother)."2,8
On 21 February 1852 Joseph Haber Cree wrote to Thomas Jefferson Cree of Upper New York State to enquire whether they might be related. Thomas Jefferson Cree replied, mentioning his great uncle John Cree.9
On 22 March 1852 Thomas Jefferson Cree was living in Wheelock, Vermont. Thomas wrote "I am... married and have two children a son and a daughter... So you see that the only prospect of propagating the name and race rests almost exclusively with me and my son as relates to this branch of the family."10
His father Moses Cree died on 11 September 1864 in Montpelier, Vermont, USA.11
On 9 June 1870 Thomas Jefferson Cree and Anna Stone were living in Wheelock, Vermont. Thomas was a lawyer and farmer aged 63. Anna was a housekeeper aged 66. They lived next door to their son Stephen and his family.12
On 1 June 1880 Thomas Jefferson Cree and Anna Stone were living in 21 (unnamed street), Wheelock, Vermont, USA, along with Stephen Gilman Cree, Clarinda D Niles, George W Cree, Lucius Niles Cree and Thomas Jefferson Cree 2d. T J Cree was aged 75 and a lawyer; Anna was 76 and "keeping house." His son Stephen was a machinist aged 44 and his wife Clare was 41 and also keeping house. T J Cree's grandson George was 17, Lucious (sic) was 14, TJC 2d was 9.13
Thomas Jefferson Cree died on 9 November 1880 in Wheelock, Vermont.2,4
Rachel Cree Sherman writes, "Jefferson Cree (28 Oct 1806 - 9 Nov 1880) was an accomplished finish carpenter, surveyor, part-time merchant, lawyer, judge and State senator. [His father] Moses (3 May 1773 - 11 Sept 1864) had moved the family from Boxford, MA, to New Boston, NH, and then to Cabot, Vermont. He held many roles in the town of Wheelock, just north of St. Johnsbury, the town where I was born, in the northeast corner of Vermont which is called the Northeast Kingdom."2,14
