Rachel Cree Sherman wrote, "George Washington [Cree] (21 Jan 1816 - 9 Nov. 1859) and Luther [Cree] (21 Aug 1820 - 28 Jan 1899) both worked as traveling agents for the Fairbanks Scale Company, which was located in St. Johnsbury. They settled in Montpelier, Vermont's capital city, five doors away from each other. They also made shoes and boots in Wheelock, perhaps carrying on their father's business, though I had no idea until your letter, that their father might have been a shoemaker, carrying on his father's craft, as was so common at that time."
Later Rachel wrote, "George had such a great sense of humor. He and Luther were always at Jefferson because they were of different political parties and were always begging him to 'get out of Wheelock' (a very small town) and move to Montpelier (the capital of the state). They were very active in town/state government. Jefferson was, as well, represented Wheelock in the state legislature (as did my mother)."1,3
