William Franklin Cree, commonly known as 'Birdie', was the illegitimate son of John Stogden Milliken and Hannah Jane (Baily) Cree, wife of Levi Cree. Born at Khedive, Greene County, Pa. in 1882, Mr. Cree first became outstanding as a sports figure while attending Southwestern Pennsylvania State Normal School (now Waynesburg State College) and also Pennsylvania State College (now Penn State) where he excelled in football and baseball. After graduation from college, he entered professional baseball and eventually played for a number of years for the New York Highlanders, a name later changed to the New York Yankees. After retiring from baseball at the end of the 1915 season, Mr. Cree entered the banking business where he was employed as head cashier at the First National Bank at Sunbury, Pa. He died and was buried at Sunbury in 1942.
