Robert Cree (of Tyrone Township PA)
Male, CreeID#4724, (between 1750 and 1757 - 1832)
Charts | Line 17. The Perth glovers line Branch 20a. The Robert Cree (2) branch of PA Mini-chart 6882 A first County Down Cree family Mini-chart 11612 Migrants to USA |
Very little is known of the life or of the family origins of the person that we refer to as Robert Cree of Perry County, or as Robert Cree no. 2. Robert, along with his brother William, came to America as a young man from County Down, Ireland, sometime during the decade of the 1770s. There is no evidence to suggest that other members of their family accompanied them on this trip. They evidently landed at Philadelphia and shortly thereafter proceeded to Tyrone Township, Cumberland (now Perry) County, Penna. where they made their home. It would seem likely that either former family friends or relatives were already living in that area and that the two brothers made their homes with these people. It was a known fact that many of the early settlers in this area had previously immigrated from Ulster. The possibility exists that the Cree brothers came as 'indentured servants' to some family or families who had paid for their passage from Ireland in exchange for some specified period of servitude. The practice of indentured servitude was very common at that time, particularly among immigrants from the British Isles. One other interesting fact might have some possible bearing on a relationship between Robert Cree and the family of Alexander Roddy of Cumberland County, Pa. In the Movilla Graveyard at Newtownards, County Down, Ireland, are the graves of one Thomas Roddy (1750-1818) and his wife Ann Cree (1762-1818). There are also additional Crees and Roddys buried in this graveyard. This might suggest that when Robert came to Cumberland County, he was taken into the household of Alexander Roddy, possibly a relative or family acquaintance, and that subsequently he married Mary, one of the daughters.
According to the Federal census records, Robert Cree was born sometime between 1750 and 1760, but the exact year of his birth is unknown. His brother William was born in 1751 so it is likely that Robert was also born in the early part of the 1750-1760 decade. The first time that Robert Cree (2) appears in documented records was in 1779 when he was listed in the Tyrone Township, Cumberland County tax assessment records. He was taxed as a 'Freeman' which meant at that time that he was 21 years of age or older, that he was unmarried and that he owned no real estate property. This would also indicate that he was born sometime prior to 1758. A Robert Cree is also shown as having served in the Cumberland County Militia in 1779, 1780 and 1782, although it is unclear if this was Robert (2) of Tyrone Township or if it was Robert Cree, Jr., son of Robert, Sr. who lived in nearby Rye Township. We do know that Robert (2) had some military experience during the Revolutionary War period as he later served as a Captain in the Third Battalion of the Cumberland County Militia. This was in 1792, long after Robert Jr. had left the area and had moved on to Greene County, Penna.
Robert Cree was married to Mary Roddy on 23 June 1783 by the Rev. John Linn at the Centre Presbyterian Church in Madison Township, Perry County, Pa. He either bought or inherited a farm from his wife's father, Alexander Roddy, upon which he lived until his death in 1832. Robert Cree might have been a carpenter or a mason as well as a farmer as he contracted in 1810 with two of his neighbors to construct an almshouse building for Cumberland County near his home in Tyrone Township. He evidently had little or no formal education as he signed his name with an X to his will which was written in 1828. Robert Cree and his wife Mary were the parents of two sons and four daughters. They are probably buried in the nearby Centre Presbyterian Church cemetery although there are no tombstones there marking the location of their graves. They were married at this church and were known to have been members of the congregation there.
