CRY and CRYEThese names seem to originate uniquely in the Isle of Man, with only isolated examples in England and Ireland. CRYE occurs to this day and is the only spelling that survives. It appears to be a modern version of CRY. It would be interesting to know how it is pronounced. The spelling CRY was common in the Isle of Man from 1600 to about 1800 when it seems to have changed to CRYE. It would appear to have derived from an earlier name Mc Cray(e). The dropping of the "Mc" or "Mac" prefix seems to have happened to almost all Mc/Mac surnames at a particular point in Manx history, unlike in Scotland where it is sporadic. |
