Patrick Crie and Marie Watson |

Patrick Crie and Marie Watson were married in Glasgow on 1st June 1694. There is good reason to believe he was the son of William Crie born in Methven, Perthshire, in 1641. The question is which William Crie? There were two first cousins called William Crie, both born in Methven in 1641. Firstly there was William Crie the son of James Crie, glover and burgess in Perth, and one of the Five Brothers. There was also William Crie, who was a son of Patrick Crie, another glover of the Five Brothers. The name Patrick means that perhaps the latter alternative is the more likely. It may also be relevant that Patrick Crie, the glover and burgess of Perth, married a Watson. |
Conjecture aside, we know that Patrick Crie in Glasgow, described as a merchant, was admitted as a burgess and Guild Brother just a few months after his wedding in 1694. In 1708 he was elected as Master of Work for the city, a post he retained for seven years. We assume that George Cree who married Bessie Stevenson in 1721 at Kilwinning, Ayrshire, was Patrick's son, partly because he named a son Patrick. The line has continued to multiply in Ayrshire until the present day with a few branches moving back into Glasgow and one to Edinbugh. |
