Know Your Ancestors

by: Jay Randall Worch

Every man, woman, and child has 32 sets of g.g.g.g. grandparents or a total of 64 people who had a 1/64th part in our being who we are today, genetically. Very few of us know anything about any of our g.g.g.g. grandparents because they lived so long ago that the written word of their existence rarely makes it to a descendant seven generations later. Many of them who lived never had a grave marker when they died and as a result they, along with any of their memories, died along with them.

When you stop to think that Eckhardt Worch, our immigrant Worch ancestor who came from Germany in 1842, was only a g.g. grandparent to us 7 Worch kids (Ronnie through Robin) then a person who was two generations older than he, would really be pushing the time back a long long way. Then add to this the fact that the subject of this sketch, Sarah Cree, is two generations farther back to our grandchildren and you then have Sarah Cree being a g.g.g.g.g.g. grandmother to those family members such as Emily and Alyssa Worch, along with the other 17 great grandchildren of Dad and Mother (Charles and Evelyne) Worch.

Sarah Cree was a special young lady and must have lived a very exciting life if not a dangerous one. She was born in the very late 1700's in western Pennsylvania and had traveled west, by wagon, into extreme eastern Ohio before it was even a state. I first picked up on her in 1803 records along with a few of her sisters, living with her parents James and Isabelle Cree in Monroe County. They were settlers in the "new land" to the west and here in Monroe County is where they settled down. Mystery surrounds Sarah Cree in that it has never been proven that her parents really were Jim and Isabelle Cree. Records do not prove her parentage. A genealogist in Pennsylvania by the name of Robert Cree, feels her parents were Patrick and Mrs. Cree but can not prove it. I think her parents were James and Isabelle Cree but I can't prove it either. What is of importance however is that James Cree and Patrick Cree were brothers, two of many born to Robert Cree of Pennsylvania. So, regardless of which one was her father, James or Patrick, she is still a grand daughter of Robert Cree, and still our g.g.g.g. grandmother. Why the question? The 1790 census of Pennsylvania shows both James and Patrick (older brother of James) as having sons and daughters. However, the census does not name the children of the family nor the mother, only the father! We don't see the children again until the 1820 census in Ohio, and then only in the James Cree family, and even then an unusually large number of children. There is no longer any sign of Patrick Cree and he was never heard from again. It was felt he was killed on the way west, some think by Indians, and maybe his children were then raised by his brother James, and wife Isabelle Cree. As a result it is very difficult to know which children were those of James Cree and which were those of Patrick Cree.

Why do Robert Cree of Pennsylvania and I disagree on who are the parents of Sarah Cree when we both have the ability to research the same records? I guess it is because I have one more record at my disposal than did Robert Cree and that was a story told to me by great Aunt Edna which had been handed down to her by great great grandma Emily (Butt) Myers (our ancestor who smoked the corn cob pipe and was almost lured into the woods by Indians up near Dublin when she was a little girl). The story was that Sarah Cree always called her parents or referred to her parents as "Ma" and "Pa" unless she was mad at them and then she called them "Jim" and "Belle." While this is a story that has been passed down through the generations and while it is possible she could have referred to them this way even if they were her adopted parents, it more or less proves to me they were indeed her parents. However, a story passed down is not genealogical proof of what is true so Robert Cree believes Sarah to be the daughter of Patrick Cree while I believe her to be the daughter of "Jim" and "Belle" Cree. And yes, I did share the story with Robert Cree of Pennsylvania, but it did very little to dissuade him from his feelings on the matter.

Sarah Cree met and married another settler, a young man by the name of Francis VanSchoik and they raised a family of many children to include a daughter Mary. Mary VanSchoik grew up and married a man by the name of Robert Butt and this family lived in a log cabin on the west bank of the Scioto River above what is now the O'Shaughnessy Dam (wasn't there then) in the 1830's. Included in their family was a daughter named Emily Butt, who later became Emily (Butt) Myers when she married a man by the name of Martin Myers. They had only one child (and therein lies another story for the "Know Your Ancestors" column) and that was a daughter named Ida May Myers who married Charles David Worch and became our great grandmother Worch who died in 1947 and was known to us Worch kids as the old lady who walked with a cane and wore a green visor all the time. Great grandmother Worch walked with a cane because when she was a very little girl her mother was allowing her to walk on a fence while holding her hand. She fell anyway and straddled the fence in the fall. She was taken to the doctor in severe pain and he said she would be fine after the pain went away. It was discovered in her later adult life that she had indeed, fractured her pelvis in the fall, and it healed incorrectly and as a result she walked with a cane her entire life.

Sarah Cree died in the late 1800's, maybe around 1879 or 1880, and I could not find the place of her burial after trying for over 25 years. I now know she is buried in an unmarked grave in the Davis Cemetery, about two miles south of Dublin, Ohio, on the east side of the River Road. The photo of her grave site, known because it is in between two others stones which are named, is contained in my notes of the Cree Family in a book of that same name.

And now you know...... The rest of the story!

John Cree At the present time (2006), no documentary proof has been found as to the ancestry of John Cree. However, all available evidence strongly indicates that he was a son of Patrick Cree and a grandson of Robert Cree, Sr. of Greene County, Pa. John Cree was married in 1808 to Nancy Brothers and assuming that he was in his early to mid twenties at the time of his marriage, he would have been of the proper age to have been a grandson of Robert Cree, Sr. Robert Cree Sr. had five sons who moved with him to Washington (now Greene) County, Pa. in the early 1780s. They were Robert, Jr., James, William, Patrick and Hamilton. We know from various existing records that John was not a son of Robert, Jr. nor was he a son of James or of Hamilton. Also, the son William disappeared from the area sometime before 1800 with some indication that he had moved to Kentucky. So, by a process of elimination, it would appear that John could only have been a son of Patrick Cree. We further know that in the Federal Census of 1790, Patrick Cree is listed as having two sons under 16 years of age. These two sons have never been identified so it could be quite probable that John was one of these sons.

Most of the information that we have on John and Nancy Brothers Cree, and of their son Robert and his children, was taken from a family Bible which was in the possession of Henrietta Cree Willison of Monroe County, Ohio. The writer visited Mrs. Willison at her home several weeks before she passed away in 1960 and copied all of the family information recorded in this Bible. Mrs. Willison was a daughter of James Polk Cree and was a great granddaughter of the above mentioned John and Nancy Cree. In this family Bible, the name Patrick Cree is faintly written in the upper corner of one of the family information pages. When the writer questioned Mrs. Willison about this notation, she said that all she knew was that her father had often said that the Crees were Irish because his great grandfathers name was Patrick and that he had been born in Ireland.

The date of John Cree's death is unknown but it appears that he died sometime after the birth of his daughter Margaret in 1815 and possibly before 1820. A son John was probably born sometime between 1815 and 1820. A barely legible stone was found in the Old Dover Cemetery in York Township, Belmont County, Ohio which reads thus: 'John Cree, son of John and Nancy Cree born
12/20/181? - died June??? aged 23 years, ? mo. ? da.' We also know that John and Nancy Cree's two daughters, Mary Ann and Margaret, are both buried in this cemetery. John Cree's widow, Nancy Brothers Cree remarried at least once and possibly two times after his death. She is listed in the 1880 census as being Nancy Brown, wife of Jacob Brown. She also supposedly had previously been married to a Jacob McCabe.

It has been suggested by some researchers that this John Cree was a son of James and Isabella Cree of Monroe County. However, this assumption is highly unlikey if not impossible. First of all, we do know that James and Isabella Cree did have a son John who was born on October 31, 1810 and who married Mary Shaw Boone. But it would have been extremely unusual for James to have given two of his sons the same first name of John. Secondly, the John Cree who married Nancy Brothers was obviously still living when the other John was born in 1810 since all of his children were apparently born after this date. All evidence at this time seems to indicate that the John Cree who married Nancy Brothers was indeed a son of Patrick Cree and his unknown wife.

Compiled by Robert H. Cree (1998.) He was born c 1787 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the son of Patrick Cree.

John Cree married Nancy Brothers on 17 March 1808 in Belmont County, Ohio, USA.

His son Robert Cree was born on 10 August 1811 in Belmont County, Ohio.

His daughter Mary Ann Cree was born on 2 August 1813 in Belmont County, Ohio.

His daughter Margaret Cree was born in August 1815 in Belmont County, Ohio.

His son John Cree was born on 20 December 1818? In Belmont County, Ohio.

John Cree died c 1820? In Belmont County, Ohio. He was probably buried in Old Dover Cemetery, Belmont County, Ohio, USA.

ChartsLine 17. The Perth glovers line

Mary Elizebeth Bear was born on 7 August 1830 in Montgomery County, Maryland, USA.

Mary Elizebeth Bear married James Hamilton Cree, son of James Robert Cree and Sarah Woods, on 4 July 1852. They had two children.1

Her husband James Hamilton Cree died on 6 December 1855 in Guernsey County, Ohio, USA.

Mary Elizebeth Bear married David Owens after 1855. The ceremony was witnessed by James Hamilton Cree. According to Elsie Owens Tatman her father Craig Owens told this story about Mary E. Bear Cree Owens:

One of the Owens doctors used to come and replenish her cupboard with herbal rememdies. One of the herbal remedies that she took regularly was Slippery Elm for her digestive system.

When Mary was up in years she broke her hip or leg and they had to suspend her from the ceiling in the old farmhouse down over the hill from Pleasant Hill Church, which is currently occupied by Sina Greenwalt. Elsie remembers visiting with Sina and Sina pointed out the hooks in the ceiling that were embedded in the ceiling that were used to suspend Mary.

When Mary was going with her first husband and they had been to church a blizzard came up. When they were going home she wanted to hunker down and stay and he wouldn't let her and he kept her moving to get home. She would not have made it if it had not been for James Hamilton Cree, her first husband.

There was a barn raising and David Owens was there and he had his eye on Mary and she was engaged to the Cree. David told her that when he came back from the Gold Rush that if she was not married he was going to marry her.

When he got back she was a widow with two children and they got married.1

Mary Elizebeth Bear died on 22 October 1921 in Guernsey County, Ohio.
