Matthew Moncreiff 2nd Laird of Culfargie

Matthew Moncreiff 2nd Laird of Culfargie was born c 1645.1

Matthew Moncreiff 2nd Laird of Culfargie married Elizabeth Thomas on 28 August 1677 in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2

Matthew Moncreiff 2nd Laird of Culfargie was a soldier for many years and fought in William of Orange's army at the Battle of the Boyne where he was wounded. He later took up a life of religion and was ordained a minister in the church.3

Matthew Moncreiff 2nd Laird of Culfargie married Margaret Mitchell in 1692. Matthew and Margaret had children Alexander, Anna, John, Elizabeth, Janet and William, all baptised at Abernethy. See the note below about this marriage.4,5,6

He succeeded his uncle John Moncreiff as Laird of Culfargie.3

His son Rev Alexander Moncreiff 3rd Culfargie was baptised on 17 July 1695 in Abernethy, Perthshire, Scotland; Culfargie, the home of this Moncreiffe family, is in Abernethy parish. His mother's name does not appear in the source record.7

His daughter Anna Moncreiff was baptised on 31 January 1697 in Abernethy, Perthshire.7

His son John Moncreiff was born in 1699.8

His daughter Elizabeth Moncreiff was baptised on 15 December 1700 in Abernethy, Perthshire; Culfargie, the home of this Moncreiffe family, is in Abernethy parish. Elizabeth's surname was spelt inconsistently.7,9

His son William Moncreiff was born in 1704.

  4. [S70] OPRI 1992, Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record. Some genealogies show a marriage to a Margaret Mitchell in 1692 in Balbardie, Fife. I can find no reliable record of such a marriage. It has therefore to be doubted.

    Dunbarny is the most convenient parish church to Mathew's estate of Culfargy and the church where many family marriages had taken place. This looks to me as much more likely, even though it renders illegitimate the eldest son Alexander, the much respected 3rd Laird of Culfargy. One can see the motivation for such a religious family to create confusion about Alexander's parentage.
