Margaret Crie was born on 23 September 1804 in Portland, Maine, USA. Note: there is a problem in that an older sister Margaret was apparently still alive in 1804. It has been suggested that the older Margaret was in fact called Mary. A further issue related to the death of this Margaret at age 17 when she was already married. These issues are unresolved at present - MS.1 She was the daughter of William Crie and Margaret Jarvie.1

Charts | Line 17. The Perth glovers line Chart 3241 Portland |
Martha Julia Adair was also known as Mattie. She was born on 8 August 1870 in Bayou Salle, Sabine Parish, Louisiana, USA.1
Julie (Crie) Clayton wrote: Martha Julia Adair was born Aug 8, 1870 in Bayou Salle, LA, the daughter of Richard Harding Adair and Elizabeth Kennedy Adair, and moved with the family to Texas some years later. Her father, being a circuit riding minister for the Methodist church, the family made many moves in Mattie’s (as she was known) childhood and girlhood. Mr. and Mrs. Adair, having better than average education, founded a small college at Covington and here the family lived for some years, Mrs. Adair teaching, and Mr. Adair teaching through the week and preaching on Sunday. They later moved to Bethany Community, Stovall Post office, Joshua and Arlington.
Everywhere they went, Mattie was interested in the young people and children. She organized many literary societies for the young people and often taught a Sunday school class for the children in the parsonage Sunday afternoons. It was when the family was living at Stovall and Mattie was Post Mistress that she met Harry Crie (as he was known) when he came to call for the Crie’s mail. The acquaintance grew into friendship and ripened into love. They were married on June 12, 1890, at Bethany Church, Johnson Co., Texas, by Rev. Charles Irvin.1
