However in a case in the Equity Court in Sydney in 1905 it was stated that her widower Hugh M'Neilly (sic) was retaining the rents and profits of her estate for his own use. She had been the "registered proprietor of land at Taralgo worth £400, was entitled to a sum of £230 under the will of her father, William Cree, and had personality of the value of £111." It was argued on behalf of their children, who were in the care of her brother William James M'Cree (sic), that those profits should "be paid to William John M'Cree, their maternal uncle with whom they are living, in part payment of their education and maintenance." The outcome of the case is not yet known.

The farm was subdivided at some stage and the larger portion is still called Green Hills. The house and its surrounds are about 30 acres and don't have the farm name connected to them any more. I've attached a photo of the house. I've been quite interested in it all my life. When I was younger it had become a ruin and was only the stone walls and the roof. The house was restored structurally in the mid 90's and had electricity connected. People had lived in it on and off and it's now been empty for about a year. I've spoken to an architect who dates it as being built around 1890. The stonework is of a very high quality: most houses in the area are made from basalt collected from paddocks whereas this one is dressed sandstone. This would have been carted in from a quarry a few kilometres away. The original kitchen is still intact and has a wood stove in it."

Obituary.- I have to chronicle the death of our lamented and much-respected resident, William Cree, aged fifty-five years. As will be remembered, he had a severe fall from his horse on his way home from Taralga on the 11th, which resulted in his death in Goulburn on the 15th instant. He was buried yesterday in the Presbyterian cemetery at Stonequarry Creek, and was followed to his last resting-place by very large numbers of persons. It was, I believe, one of the largest funerals that ever took place here. The late Mr. Cree settled on his own freehold, Green Hills, near Taralga, about twenty-two years ago, and earned for himself the esteem of all persons who came in contact with him. He was very upright in all his transactions. He was very firm in what he believed to be right, and to discountenance every bad act. He leaves a widow and two daughters and one son, the youngest eight years old, well provided for. He was a good husband and a kind father, which will deepen their sorrow at their bereavement. I can truly say the void he has caused in this part will not be easily filled.

Death.- Mrs.Cree, widow of the late Mr. William Cree, of Green Hills, Taralga, died suddenly at her residence on Friday morning at tIhe age of 73 years. Mrs. Cree was always a remarkably robust woman, and until recently had enjoyed good health. Some time ago, however, she sustained a heavy fall in passing from one room to another, and since then had not been so well as usual. Beyond complaining of a slight headache on retiring on Thursday night, she made no further mention of feeling unwell, and on Friday morning she was in the act of putting her boots on, when she fell back dead, apparently without a struggle, the cause of death being set down to rheumatic affection of the heart. A formal inquiry was held before Mr. Coroner Ross, when it was recorded that death was due to natural causes. Thie deceased lady came to the State about 54 or 55 years ago, and later she left and went to California, where she was married. Subsequently, in company with her husband, she came to this district and took up the land where they have since resided. There were three children of the marriage - Mrs. Hugh McNeilly, who died some years ago; Mr. William Cree, who resides at Green Hills; and Mrs. P. Elliott, of Bannaby. The death of Mrs. Cree will leave a gap, not easily filled, in her neighbourhood, as she was of a most kindhearted and charitable disposition, and always one of the first to help her neighbours or those needing assistance. The funeral took place on Saturday, being largely attended. The remains were interred in the Presbyterian cemetery at Stone-quarry beside those of her late husband. The Rev. J. D. Nicholson read the burial service."

- [S419] Website, His Side of the Story http://onhisside.wordpress.com/2013/10/19/…, On 14 October 1892, just six months after the birth of their youngest daughter Katherine, Sarah died suddenly at the young age of thirty one. Mary Alice would have been seven, Billy five, Annie three and Katherine still a baby. Hugh was left to raise four young children on his own which was not destined to work out according to a news report from 1905. According to the report Sarah Jane did not have a will and thus it would be a number of years before her estate was finalised. According to this report, Sarah’s death occurred in 1901, however, I’m hoping this is a misprint as she was buried in 1892 in Stone Quarry Cemetery, Taralga. In 1905, according to the news report, the children were being cared for by their maternal uncle William James Cree who was only eighteen at the time of Sarah’s death. I can’t imagine he would have taken the children into his care immediately after Sarah’s death as he was only eighteen at that time. But, it would have been very difficult for Hugh to care for the children on his own and I imagine that Sarah’s mother may have cared for them until William’s marriage to Margaret Quinn in 1900. This household would have been very busy as William and Margaret’s children arrived regularly: Bertha M b1901 d 1927; Evelyn b1903 d1916; William S b1905; Catherine b1907 d 1907; Alice Ellen b1909; Ann J b1911; possibly others born after the search date cut off 1913.
