Madam,
I have a terrible tale to unfold you and one that almost unnerves (?) me in the telling. Your brother Tim is dead. (We all called him Tim)
He died this evening at 3:20. It was a death by violence - a pistol shot. The circumstance was thus: I work mostly colored men here and we have a rule of paying them every two weeks on Saturday night. They, when they get their money always engage in dice throwing or Craps as it is termed. About 9 o'clock last night, one of those negro desperados who lost in the game, 'held up' the most successful winner at the point of a pistol demanding his money. He gave it up and then when robbed, he started to run toward our kitchen and dining room tent. Not satisfied with securing the fellows money, he fired two shots after him, it is supposed more to frighten him than anything else. One of those shots struck your brother in the abdomen with results as stated. Tim happened to be sitting in the dining room tent with three others, when the ball entered. He was just in the act of rising to go to bed as he said. He lingered on until 3:20 this afternoon. We done all that medical skill could do for him, had one of the finest surgeons in the State attending to him. I will bury him in Greenville, Miss. about 18 miles from here and will see that he gets a respectable burial. I presume that you would much prefer that he be buried in Des Moines but as he told me some time ago that you had no kin at all in Des Moines it would be rather inconvenient to do so.
In his death I have lost a true friend and I know you have lost a devoted brother. In the accident ( for it was an accident as far as he was concerned) which thus led to his death, he had no words or quarrel with any body; was sitting among his friends when the terrible summons came.
I will write you again after the burial. In the meantime, write me to Rex, Miss.
Very Respectfully,
Timothy Ford. He was buried in Greenville, Mississippi, USA. He was born on 13 March 1863 in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the son of Mahlon Hoover and Hannah Jane Cree.
