William Chruy

Male, CreeID#10891, (c 1709 - )
ChartsLine 25.The Chree line of Aberdeenshire
William Chruy was born c 1709 in Dockington, Glenbuchat, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1

In the absence of a baptism record, the parentage of William Chruy has been deduced as the more likely of two possibilities. We find it more likely that his parents were Jon. Chruie and Margaret Morgan, who were married in 1708, and somewhat less likely that they were Robert Chruie and Nance Forbes who were married in 1704.

There is a troubling lack of primary sources for this period. The Glenbuchat Heritage website has a birthdate of 1709 for both William Chruie and his wife Jannett Dasson. This means they married quite late in life (both aged 38) and that Catherine Chruie born in 1766 cannot be Jannett's daughter. He was the son of Jon. Chruie and Margaret Morgan.

William Chruy married Jannet Dasson on 19 July 1747 in Glenbuchat, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. (Is this a misspelling of Dawson, a known surname in Glanbuchat?)2

His son Wlilliam Chruie was born on 24 September 1749 in Sunnybrae, Glenbuchat, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.3,4

If you take the left fork at the Milton and follow the road to the Old Glenbuchat Kirk you pass through Dockington farm. It is still a farm today and in the map of 1850 there was the farm cottage on the left and the farm buildings on the right as is the case today... The first mention of an occupant was William Chruie born 1709. It is stated that he was born in Dockington but it is unclear whether it was him or his wife who was born there. The Chruie family became the Chree family who lived at Sunnybrae and had a great influence on the life of the Glen in later generations.5

His daughter Catherine Chruy was born c 1766 in Glenbuchat, Aberdeenshire.1

His son Francis Chree was born c 1767.
