Huntingdon, Pa. 'Semi-Weekly News' - May 19, 1910
Jonathon Elliot Cree of Smithfield died extremely suddenly yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock while sitting on a chair in front of No.1 engine house in this place. Mr. Cree, who had not been in good health had been over to town in the morning and had gone home for his dinner and in the afternoon he said he was going back to town again, but his wife protested that he was not strong enough for a second trip. He, however, thought that he would enjoy the bustle of the town, incident to the show, and came over in the afternoon. When he arrived in front of the engine house, Mr. Weight, the janitor, noticed that Mr. Cree was exhausted and tendered him a chair, which was gratefully accepted. In a short time he fell from the chair and rolled out onto the pavement. He was picked up and carried into the engine house and laid on the floor on some blankets. Dr. Schum was summoned but Mr. Cree had reached the end of his earthly existence. Undertaker Harry Brown took charge of the remains.
Mr. Cree, at the time of his death, was aged 60 years, 8 months and 1 day. He was born at Shade Gap and when a young man he came to Huntingdon and was employed by Mr. J.C. Blair in the stationery store which at that time was located where the Brunswick Hotel now stands. Later, Mr. Cree worked on the railroad and for a period of 16 years he had been a guard at the Reformatory. Two years ago, he underwent a severe spell of sickness and after recovering from it, he worked again at the Reformatory for three months when he suffered a paralytic stroke which rendered him incapable of working and he could talk but little.
He was twice married, his first wife being a daughter of Mr. N.B. Corbin. To them four children were born, three of whom are living: Mrs. Kate Decker of Huntingdon, Mrs. Anne Ewing of Harrisburg and Elmer (*)Cree of Glenwood, Pa.
