Marion Samuel Cree was born on 25 March 1895 in Mapleton, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the son of William David Cree and Emma Susan Robley.
His father William David Cree died on 23 December 1898 in Shade Gap, Dublin Twp., Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA.
His son Marion Hughes Cree was born in 1921.
His mother Emma Susan Robley died on 21 November 1926 in Jeanette, Pennsylvania, USA.
His son Marion Hughes Cree died on 29 March 1948 in a veterans' hospital.1
Marion Samuel Cree died on 4 November 1957 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA. He had suffered a heart ailment since June 16 and had been in failing health since that time.2 He was buried in IOOF Cemetery, Mapleton, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA.
Visitors to the beautiful I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Mapleton, Huntingdon County, Pa. are often surprised and somewhat puzzled when they see the unusual granite slab marking the grave site of a Huntingdon County native who laid claim to being the author of one of America's most popular patriotic songs.
Marion Samuel Cree was born in Mapleton on March 25, 1895 and was a son of William D. and Emma (Robley) Cree. His father died when he was three years old and shortly thereafter his mother remarried and moved to western Pennsylvania. Sam, as he was known to his family and friends, remained with an aunt in Mapleton until he finished elementary school, after which time he rejoined his mother who was then living in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. He finished high school there, enrolled in and graduated from the Chalfont Business College and then went to work for the Prudential Insurance company.
On July 31, 1917, Sam Cree enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was soon sent to France where he served honorably and with distinction until his discharge in August of 1919. After his return from service in World War 1, he operated a welding business in Washington, Penna. for some time and then he went to work for the Jessup Steel Company where he remained for the next 17 years.
Sam Cree was a gifted singer and song writer. He particularly liked to write patriotic songs and he was in great demand to sing these songs at picnics and war veterans' outings. The song that was his favorite and which was most popular with his friends and comrades was his 'God Bless America'. Some time after he had introduced this song, Mr. Cree saw an advertisement in a veteran's magazine concerning a nation-wide search for a song to replace the 'Star Spangled Banner' as the national anthem. Believing that his 'God Bless America' had all of the qualifications to be a winner in this search, and at the urging of his friends, he submitted it to the music publishing house that had run the advertisement - a publishing house that was owned by the noted New York song writer, Irving Berlin. Apparently, Sam Cree heard nothing further after he had submitted his song. However, some time later, fellow employees at the mill where he worked informed him one morning that they had heard Kate Smith sing his 'God Bless America' the previous night on her radio show. The song became an immediate success and was widely acclaimed as another great hit for Irving Berlin.
Samuel Cree shortly thereafter began legal proceedings through which he sought to gain recognition as the real author of the song. Although the lyrics of Berlin's version of the song were somewhat different from those of Mr. Cree's, the melody and the words of the chorus were nearly identical to those of the original song. The rights to the ownership of 'God Bless America' were involved in litigation for over 15 years but Samuel Cree was never successful in achieving a victory in the courts. Apparently, the defendants in this litigation successfully argued that one of the rules of the original contest was that all songs submitted were to become the property of the publishing house.
By the summer of 1957, after many years of trying to prove his claim, Mr. Cree was physically and financially exhausted and was suffering from a severe heart condition. Fearing that he had not much longer to live, he made a trip to his boyhood home of Mapleton where he selected a cemetery plot high up on the hillside of the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. He then made arrangements to have three verses and the chorus of his 'God Bless America' cut into a three foot by six foot granite slab.
On the 4th of November 1957, Marion Samuel Cree passed away and in accordance with his wishes, he was laid to rest at Mapleton beneath the stone slab on which were engraved the words of his beloved 'God Bless America'. Although the authorship of this song will always be credited to another, the words on this stone will forever remind visitors that it was actually the work of a native son of Huntingdon County.3
