Jane Cree was born in 1827 or 1828.1 She was the daughter of Isaac Cree and Maria Sanders. Jane Cree appeared on the census with Isaac Cree and Maria Sanders on 7 June 1841 in Fish House, South Muskham, Nottinghamshire, England. Isaac was an agricultural labourer.2 On 3 January 1845 in the Quarter Sessions, Newark, Nottinghamshire, England, Jane Cree was sentenced to transportation for seven years. "late of the parish of South Muskham, singlewoman. Stealing on 9th December 1844, at South Muskham, one bonnet value 1s. the goods and chattels of Isaac CREE. One cap, value 2d. One habity shirt, value 3d. One frock, value 2d. the goods and chattels of Susannah Cree. 1 watch, value 20s. the goods and chattels of James Cree." On the back of the indictment is a list of witnesses: Susannah Cree, Maria Cree, Robert Dale, Edwin Upton. True bill. Pleaded guilty.3,4,5 In April 1845 Jane Cree was granted a Royal Pardon and her sentence reduced to one year's hard labour.6,5 On 23 October 1846 in the Quarter Sessions, Newark, Nottinghamshire, Jane Cree was sentenced to seven years transportation for a second time. The indictment records show, "Certificate of previous conviction for Jane Cree for the above crime, and states she was sentenced to seven years transportation."

Indictment: Jane CREE, late of the parish of South Muskham, stealing on 14th August 1846, one bonnet, value 1s. One cap, value 2s. Two dresses, value 5s. One petticoat, value 1s. One pair of stockings, value 1s. One pair of boots, value 1s. One pair of shoes, value 6d. Two handkerchiefs, value 2s. One collar, value 6d. One comb, value 6d. One brush, value 6d. One bag, value 6d. the goods and chattels of Susannah CREE.

On the back of the indictment is a list of witnesses: Susannah Cree, Frederick Wills, William Haynes, Henry Dixon, Maria Ringrose. Also the name Isaac Cree ruled out, and it states that the other five witnesses were in court.5,7,4 She sailed on 23 March 1847 from Woolwich, London, England, aboard the ship "Asia." (Qld State Lib says 9 Mar 1847.)8,5,9

Jane Cree arrived in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, on 21 July 1847. On board the convict ship Asia.10

Jane Cree married Samuel Daw on 12 July 1848 in "Brickendon", Longford, Tasmania, Australia.11 On 21 January 1850 Jane Cree was sentenced to seven days in the cells for disturbing the peace. On 7 October 1850 Jane Cree was "fully committed for trial" on a charge of forgery. She absconded on 27 January 1853.

C 1853 in Hobart, Tasmania, Jane Cree was described as "a nursemaid. Height 5/0 1/2, Age 25, Complexion fresh, Head oval, Hair sandy brown, Visage oval, Eyeborows sandy, Eyes grey, Nose small cocked, Mouth large, Chin round, Native place Nottingham, Marks large scar of left side of forehead."11 On 7 March 1853 Jane Cree was "absent from her authorysed place of residence" and sentenced to 2 months hard labour. She appealed on 26 March 1853.11

Jane Cree died in Longford, Tasmania, Australia.

Joseph Handby

The latter's surname was spelt Hanby. He was a Master Carpenter and he and his wife Charlotte had six children living with them.4 In the Court Baron, Bolsover, Derbyshire, England, on 4 April 1856 Joseph Handby was admitted as tenant of land near Palterton Carr called Cow Smithy, 2-3-22 acres. Joseph is described as a wheelwright.5

His daughter Ann Handby was born c August 1856 in Bolsover, Derbyshire, England.6

His daughter Charlotte Handby was born c May 1858 in Chesterfield Reg Dist, Derbyshire.7

On 7 April 1861 Joseph Handby was living along with Ann Handby. Joseph was described as a widower aged 45 and a master carpenter employing two boys. He had seven children at home aged from 2 to 18.8 On 15 September 1864 in the Court Baron, Bolsover, Derbyshire, Joseph Handby and Job Charlesworth surrendered the tenancy of the old Methodist Chapel at the bottom of Chapel Breck for £80. Job Charlesworth, (the surviving trustee) was referred to as a yeoman and Joseph Handby as a carpenter.9

Joseph Handby was a joiner on 27 December 1881.10

On 8 April 1850 John Spray was living in Palterton, Scarcliffe parish, Derbyshire. He was the owner of a "public house, shop, buildings, yard and garden." Clearly the entry was out of date as John had died in 1848.6

Fanny was his mother-in-law, a widow aged 71. Servants in the house were Elizabeth Ann Ellis aged 16 and John Starbrook, a farm labourer aged 19.5

George Johnson married Sarah Cree, daughter of Frances Cree, c August 1870 in Newark Reg Dist, Nottinghamshire, England.1

George Johnson died before 1881. Several men with the same name died at Newark between 1870 and 1881. The deaths were in 1874 (age 45), 1875 (age 42) and 1879 (age 27). The last seems the lost likely although he would have been only 18 at thier marriage.1

On 10 March 1773 in the Court Baron, Bolsover, Derbyshire, England, with Elizabeth Woodhead and John Cree, Elizabeth Short surrendered the tenancy of "Ringoe Bottom, 5 acres; Esps, 3 acres; Ringoe, 3.5 acres; Colgrave Gate Close, 4 acres; Oldfield Close or Oxcroft Close 1.5 acres... in Clowne within this Manor..." to Mary Kitchen of Mansfield, widow, for a mortgage of £84 at 4% interest.2 On 1 April 1780 in the Court Baron, Bolsover, Derbyshire, Elizabeth Short surrendered the tenancy of the land she has just acquired for a loan of £30 with lawful interest.3

Elizabeth Short married Joseph Hill on 12 February 1782.4
