Mary Fearn

Female, CreeID#92, (4 March 1753 - August 1822)
ChartsLine 1. The Bolsover line
Mini-chart 1 Bolsover
Mini-chart 30 Sutton cum Duckmanton
Mary Fearn was baptised on 4 March 1753 in Sutton cum Duckmanton, Derbyshire, England.1 She was the daughter of William Fearn and Catherine Clark.

Her son James Cree was born in April 1776 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England.2

Her son John Cree was born in 1777 or 1778.

Mary Fearn married James Cree, son of James Cree and Mary Cree (married name), on 28 July 1777 in the church of St Mary, Sutton cum Duckmanton, Derbyshire, England. Both were of this parish. James signed with his mark and Mary with her name: "Mary Fearn now Mary Cree". A Banns Certificate shows that banns were read on 13, 20 and 27 July 1777.

Mary Fearn may provide the link with Beeley which could relate to some mysteries relating to their son John Cree. First, where did James and Mary live from their marriage in 1777 until 1788 during which time three children were born? Second, why did their son John turn up in Beeley in 1813?

Entries in the Beeley parish register record two Fern burials: "23 Apr 1767 Mrs FERN widow of late Rev Mr FERN" and "27 Dec 1763 Hannah FERN widow Beeley." This seems to suggest that the Fern (or Fearn) family were established at Beeley. A further burial of Charles Fearn aged 70 in 1894 confirms the long-term connection of the Fearns with Beeley.

Where Mary Fearn and James Cree were living between August 1777 and June 1788 is a mystery despite thorough searches of all parish registers within many miles of Bolsover.

Her daughter Mary Cree was baptised on 29 June 1788 in Sutton cum Duckmanton, Derbyshire.3

Her son Robert Cree was baptised on 25 December 1791 in Sutton cum Duckmanton, Derbyshire.3

Her daughter Ann Cree was born c 1793?

Her son Joseph Cree was baptised on 28 June 1795 in Sutton cum Duckmanton, Derbyshire.3

Mary Fearn died in August 1822.4 She was buried on 10 August 1822 in Bolsover, Derbyshire, England. The description "wife rather than "widow" implies that James was still alive.5

John Cree

Male, CreeID#95, (1777 or 1778 - November 1823)
John Cree was born in 1777 or 1778. No record of his birth or baptism has been found despite exhaustive searches over more than thirty years, but there is no other Cree family he could belong to. However I have recently (2020) found his burial record, with age given. The date shown here is calculated from his age at death (45 years).

A YDNA test on a Cree descendant (my first cousin Martin) suggests a male-line link between Martin and a Humphrey and NO relationship to any Cree line,

One possible explanation (among several) is that John Cree was a son of Thomas Humphrey of Bolsover and Mary (Fearn) Cree - possibly just before Mary's marriage to James Cree. He was the son of Mary Fearn. Marriage banns for John Cree and Anne Spray were published from 15 December 1811 to 29 December 1811 in Edensor, Derbyshire, England.1 Marriage banns for John Cree and Anne Spray were published from 14 June 1812 to 28 June 1812 in Scarcliffe, Derbyshire, England.2

John Cree married Anne Spray, daughter of John Spray and Mary Hopkinson, on 29 June 1812 in Scarcliffe, Derbyshire. "John Cray [sic] ... and Ann Spray... by Banns." Both were of the parish of Scarcliffe, although banns were also read in Edensor parish.3

John Cree was a labourer in April 1813 in Beeley, Derbyshire, England.4

His son Joseph Cree was baptised on 14 April 1813 in Beeley, Derbyshire.5

His son John Cree was baptised on 30 April 1815 in Beeley, Derbyshire.5

His mother Mary Fearn died in August 1822.6

John Cree died in November 1823 in Scarcliffe, Derbyshire.7 He was buried on 22 November 1823 in Scarcliffe, Derbyshire. His abode was recorded as Palterton.8

Anne Spray married Isaac Allen on 29 July 1827 in Scarcliffe, Derbyshire. They were married by licence.7

On 3 February 1832 Anne Spray and Isaac Allen were living in Scarcillfe parish, Derbyshire, England. Isaac is recorded in the Scarcliffe Poor Rate list as having a cottage and garden. The parish includes Palterton where his wife Anne's parents had a pub, probably the Hare and Hounds, so it seems likely that Isaac and Anne were living in Palterton.8

On 6 June 1841 Anne Spray and Isaac Allen were living in Back Street, Arnold, Nottinghamshire, England. Isaac was aged 35 (rounded down) and his occupation was given as Police. Ann was aged 45 (also rounded down). Both were born outside Nottinghamshire.9

Joseph's occupation was given as "Innkeeper 'Swan' Boot and Shoe Maker." He was 37 and his wife Mary, born in Windsor, Berkshire was also 37. Their daughters Fanny, Anne and Elizabeth were 9, 7 and 6 and Joseph's mother, now Ann Allen was 59 and married (not a widow). Anne Commons was a 15-year-old servant and George Adsetts, 16, was an apprentice boot and shoemaker.11

It is reported that James Cree was born in April 1776 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. I am suspicious of this Family Search christening record as no church is named, the exact date is not given and no source reference is given. James's parents' names are given as James Cree and Mary.1 He was the son of Mary Fearn.

James Cree married Rebecca Mellors on 26 August 1805 in the church of St Wilfred, Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. James Cree was a labourer.2

His daughter Mary Cree was baptised on 9 October 1805 in Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England.3
