James Cree was born in 1838 in Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland. The 1881 Census of Dunning states that James was born in Blantyre. Since he would have moved to Blantyre before the age of two, it is possible that he thought he was born there. His next youngest brother was born in Blantyre and also lived in Dunning in 1881.1,2 He was the son of James Cree and Isabel Smail.

On 22 August 1866 James Cree was living in 4 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.3

James Cree married Elisabeth Paterson, daughter of William Paterson and Isabella Simson, on 22 August 1866 in Knapphouse, Kinclaven, Perthshire, Scotland. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Leslie Cree. James was 28 and Elisabeth 24. On registering the birth of his daughter Elisabeth in 1872, James gave their marriage date as 22 August 1867, but this is incorrect.4,3

His son James Cree was born on 16 February 1867 in Hutchesontown (Glasgow), Lanarkshire, Scotland.5,6

His daughter Isabella Moncrieff Cree was born on 1 July 1868 in Hutchesontown, Lanarkshire, Scotland.7,8

His daughter Elisabeth Smail Cree was born on 6 January 1872 in Newtown of Pitcairns, Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.9,10,11,12

His son Alexander Cree was born in 1876 in Anderston (Glasgow), Lanarkshire.15,16

His son Louis Cree was born in 1879 in Anderston (Glasgow), Lanarkshire.15,17

On 3 April 1881 James Cree and Elisabeth Paterson were living in Quarry Road, Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, along with James Cree, John Cree, Alexander Cree and Louis Cree. James was a power loom tenter aged 43 and born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire. His wife aged 38, named as Lizzie, had no occupation shown. James Cree the younger was 14, John was 7, Alexander 5 and Louis 1.18

James Cree died on 17 October 1924 in Newtown of Pitcairns, Dunning, Perthshire. The informant was John Cree. He was 87 years old and a retired power loom tenter.19,20

William Crie was baptised on 10 January 1641 in Perth, Scotland. Witnesses were William Robertson and William Crie.2 He was the son of James Crie and Issobell Fleeming.1

William Crie and William Crie were both baptised in 1641. They were first cousins (sons of the brothers James and Patrick Crie who were both glovers). Both baptisms were witnessed by William Crie, son of Harrie Crie, the eldest of the "five brothers." There is room for doubt as to which of the two had the children baptised at Methven.

His daughter Jean Cree was baptised on 5 August 1715 in Methven, Perthshire.1

His son Laurence Crie was baptised on 6 September 1719 in Methven, Perthshire.1

John Crie was living in Tippermallo, Methven, Perthshire, Scotland. When I visited Tippermallo House in 1995 it was owned by a Smythe family. It was sold in 2007 and the agent's description included this: It is understood that Tippermallo dates from 1752 when it was built for the younger son of the Smythe family who owned the Methven Estate and Methven Castle.

Before 1752 Tippermallo was the home of a branch of the Moncrieff family.

It was probably on his marriage to his second wife Agnes Wilson that John became "John Crie in Tippermallo" as their son John Crie was apprenticed in 1725 (after his father's death) with "consent... given by John and Hugh Wilson and Hugh Crie all in Tippermallo." That same year, 1725, John's cousin James Crie, surgeon and later Provost of Perth, married Elizabeth Moncrieff. She is thought to be of the Moncrieffs of Tippermallo, who were lairds there until 1744 when Sir Hugh Moncrief (sic), the sixth Baronet Moncrieff and last Moncrieff laird of Tippermalloch, died unmarried.2

John Crie died before 1721.3 He was mentioned as the deceased father of apprentice James Cree on 6 December 1721; shoemaker for four years to "Robert Smith, shoemaker, burgess of Perth". Apprentices of GB states "Cree Jas [son of] Jn of Tippermaloch to Rob Smyth of Perth, cordw. £2-18-4." Indenture states "James Crie Lawful son to the deceast John Cree in Tippermallock". Consent is by Hugh Cree in Tippermallock and John Thomson, Shoemaker, Methven.4,5 John Crie was mentioned as the deceased father of apprentice John Cree on 23 December 1725; shoemaker for four years to "William Douglas, late Deacon of the Shoemakers of Perth". John's father is given as "the deceased John Crie in Tippermallo". Consent is given by John and Hugh Wilson and Hugh Crie all in Tippermallo.6
