James Cree was born on 1 September 1798 in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of John Cree and Susannah Neill.2 James Cree was baptised on 2 December 1798 in Tarbolton, Ayrshire.1

In 1833 James Cree was living in Langlands Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.3

James Cree married Agnes McGregor, daughter of James McGregor and Janet Howat, on 21 March 1836 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.2,4,5

On 7 June 1841 James Cree and Agnes McGregor were living in Titchfield Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. James was a blacksmith.6

Family sources, his marriage certificate and the Register of New Zealand Presbyterian Ministers give James Warnock Cree's parents as James Warnock and Janet Falconer. We have found no record of their marriage however, and a marriage record in the parochial record of Kilmarnock shows a marriage between Janet Falconer and Thomas Warnock.

After his father died in 1851, James went to live with his paternal grandmother, Agnes McGregor (whose first husband had been Walter Warnock) and her second husband James Cree. It is believed that James was adopted by them, taking the Cree surname.7

On 30 March 1851 James Cree and Agnes McGregor were living in Titchfield Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, along with James Warnock Cree. James Warnock Cree was shown as James Cree.8

James Cree died on 5 June 1867 in Kelk Place, Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland. The informant was James Warnock Cree. The cause of death was "Disease of Liver, Stomach." The informant, James Warnock Cree, was described as James's grandson.9

James Cree was a blacksmith.10

Agnes McGregor was born between 1790 and 1795 in Craigie, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 She was the daughter of James McGregor and Janet Howat.

Agnes McGregor married Walter Warnock on 23 June 1811 in Sorn, Ayrshire, Scotland. Both lived in Sorn.2,3

Her daughter Janet Warnock was born on 19 June 1814 in Sorn, Ayrshire.3

Her son James Warnock was born on 24 September 1816 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.4

Agnes McGregor married James Cree, son of John Cree and Susannah Neill, on 21 March 1836 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.5,2,6

On 7 June 1841 Agnes McGregor and James Cree were living in Titchfield Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. James was a blacksmith.7

Her son James Warnock died in 1851.8

Family sources, his marriage certificate and the Register of New Zealand Presbyterian Ministers give James Warnock Cree's parents as James Warnock and Janet Falconer. We have found no record of their marriage however, and a marriage record in the parochial record of Kilmarnock shows a marriage between Janet Falconer and Thomas Warnock.

After his father died in 1851, James went to live with his paternal grandmother, Agnes McGregor (whose first husband had been Walter Warnock) and her second husband James Cree. It is believed that James was adopted by them, taking the Cree surname.8

On 30 March 1851 Agnes McGregor and James Cree were living in Titchfield Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, along with James Warnock Cree. James Warnock Cree was shown as James Cree.9

Her husband James Cree died on 5 June 1867 in Kelk Place, Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland.10

On 2 April 1871 Agnes McGregor was living in the household of James Warnock Cree and Agnes Hyslop Gordon in 25 Victoria Street, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, along with Mary Agnes Cree. James was shown as James W Cree, a lodger, aged 29 and a Presbyterian Minister; Agnes was 29 and their daughter Mary Agnes was 2. James's grandmother Agnes was 80 and an annuitant. The family were boarding in the house of Jane Powell aged 33, a hosier.11

Agnes McGregor died on 24 September 1875 in 61 Robertson Place, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. She died at 1.30 pm and the cause was certified as Choleraic Diarrhea. Her age was given as 85. The informant was a grandson, John Lees.12

John Crie

Male, CreeID#1784, (1 May 1761 - 16 February 1843)
ChartsLine 7. The Perth glovers line
Chart 1444 Saline (1)
Chart 1784 Matinicus
John Crie was born on 1 May 1761 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of John Cree and Agnes McFarland. John Crie was baptised on 2 May 1761 in the High Kirk, Glasgow, Scotland.3,2

On 2 May 1761, John Crie was also known as John Cree.2

His mother Agnes McFarland died on 26 November 1775 in Glasgow, Scotland.4,5

It is suggested that John Cree or Crie is the same person as the John Crie who was "conscripted off of the streets of Glasgow Scotland and was 'encouraged' to fight with the British Army during the revolutionary war." Certainly the main recruitment effort of that war was from 1778 (following the French intervention). The minimum age for being press-ganged into the Royal Navy was legally 18. The army took recruits much younger. It has been assumed by Julie Clayton and others that his brother William Crie is the same William Crie who settled in Maine. If this is the case, it lends some credence to the assumption that John Crie also settled in Maine. On the other hand the age at death shown on John's headstone (31 January 1763) is inconsistent with this theory. The information here about John's wife and descendants is based on this assumption.6

In 1783 he was honorably discharged from the Army and, given the choice between returning to Europe or staying in America, he decided on the latter.6

He became an American citizen in 1784 and settled on Matinicus [Island]. Randy Schroder's wife [Alice Williams?] had other 4x great-grandparents who "also came from Scotland to Maine about the same time [and] were Samuel McFarland b. abt 1765 d. bef. 1805 m. Elizabeth McKechnie." This is of interest because John Crie's mother was a McFarland.7,8

John Crie married Mary Hall, daughter of Ebenezer Hall Jr and Susannah Young, on 25 December 1786 in Vinalhaven Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. John was described as "John Crie of Criehaven, now Ragged Island." Mary was 25 years of age and the daughter of Ebenezer Hall.6,9

His son John Crie was born on 15 January 1788 in Matinicus Island, Maine, USA.10,1

His son Ebenezer Crie was born in 1790 in Criehaven, Ragged Island, Knox County, Maine, USA.8

His daughter Susannah Crie was born on 4 March 1792 in Matinicus Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA.11,12

His daughter Hannah Crie was born on 17 November 1795 in Matinicus Island, Hancock County, Maine.11,12

"Know all men by these presents that I, Jonathan Foster of Castine in the County of Hancock and State of Massachusetts yeoman in Consideration of Fifty Dollars paid me by John Crie of Vinalhaven County & State afersaid the Receipt whereof I do acknowledge....a certain neck of land adjoining the South Fox Island in Penobscot Bay so called. Bounded as follows: Beginning at Calderwood Sawmill so called and running by the mill pond to the head of the Pond thence running by an old Fence over the neck to the Water and thence by the Water on the Shore round to the bound first mentioned only said Foster reserves one Acre of land for a brow for the use of said Calderwood mill and a Road to said Mill...."

"IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I the said Jonathan Foster have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this Eleventh Day of May in the year of our LORD One thousand seven hundred and ninety seven. Jonathan Foster"

[Witnessed by John Lee and Saml A. Whitney, acknowledged for Eli Forbes, Jus. Peace and recorded with the Record of Deeds for the County of Hancock in Lib: 5 Folo: 217 by Eli Forbes, Reg. on 12 May 1797.]

It appears that John Crie was a landowner of sorts on the shore. It would be interesting to see what became of this land following this purchase. It is possible that this was the Crie "pied a terre" and enabled Crie to tie up his ship at his own facility.

The price in 1797 is listed in dollars while just in 1794 the Vinalhaven taxes were assessed in pounds, shillings and pence, ten years after the British had left Castine.13

His daughter Margaret Crie was born on 6 November 1802 in Matinicus Island, Hancock County, Maine.11,1

"Know all men by these presents, that I John Crie of the Island of Metinecus [sic] in the County of Hancock and State of Maine yeoman in Consideration of the love and good will & five Dollars paid by my wife Mary Crie The Receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, do hereby give, grant, sell, and convey unto the said Mary Crie a certain Lot or Parcel of Land lying & being on the said Island Butted & founded as follows viz-- [a twenty acre parcel and an eight acre parcel are described] To HAVE and to HOLD the afore-granted Premises to the said Mary Crie [etc.]"

"IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I the said John Crie have hereunto set my hand and seal this fourteenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven John Crie"

[This deed was witnessed by Joseph Ingraham and Mary Ingraham and affirmed by Joseph Ingraham, Justice of Peace. There is no note that it was recorded.]

Regarding the spelling, a deed of 1790 spelled the name "Mentinicus" and the county was Lincoln and the state was the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at that time.

On the reverse of the six-panel-fold document there are three markings. One identifies it as "Deed--John Crie to Mary Crie". The second is a pencil note "$50000 Mercy Crie" and the third, "This is to certify that I give up this Deed to My son John in his Mother place Deceased after My Deces that after your Deces to your son William if in life. John Crie Sener Mitncus febry 1835"

This looks like John Crie sold his land to his wife, expecting his wife to outlive him, and thereby avoid probate and taxes. Since his wife died 17 Feb 1835, it appears that John senior, who had reacquired the land as part of his wife's estate and endorsed the deed over to his son John with a stipulation that grandson William be the next owner.

The 1827 and 1835 signatures are very similar although the latter is rather unsteady. Mercy Crie was Mercy Young who became Crie in 1839 on her marriage to John's grandson Reuben Crie. After Reuben's death she married his brother William Crie in 1844.

Prior to the dates noted in the deed, the land had been officially titled to the residents, "under a Resolve of Maine, passed Feb 14, 1825. James Irish, Land agent, Aug. 10, 1828, 'deeded to James Hall, John Hall, Joseph Condon, Ebenezer Peirce, Benjamin Condon, John Crie, Ebenezer Crie, Joseph Young, Jacob Smith and all other persons owning or possessing land on Matinicus, all the interest which the State had in said island, about seven hundred acres.'" [NEHGR]13

His daughter Susannah Crie died in 1832.12

His wife Mary Hall died on 17 February 1835 in Matinicus Island, Knox County, Maine, USA.8,14

John Crie died on 16 February 1843 in Matinicus Island, Knox County, Maine.15 He was buried in Matinicus Island, Knox County, Maine. "He is buried in a small graveyard close to the center of the island." (Islands). "John CRIE. died Feb 16. 1843: aged 80 years. 0 months & 16 days." (photo Bjarni Brown.)6,16

Samuel was a wool waper aged 48 and Janet was 45. Their son Andrew was 13 and an office boy. Samuel's niece is named as "Mary," aged 24 and her occupation is given as "Assistant Inspection." We suspect that she is actually Margaret Cree as she is 24, the same age as Margaret who was living with them in 1861. Archibald Crie1

Male, CreeID#1792, (8 June 1828 - 1898)
ChartsLine 7. The Perth glovers line
Chart 1444 Saline (1)
Chart 1792 Kirkintilloch
Archibald Crie was baptised on 8 June 1828 in Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of Archibald Crie and Mary Calderwood.

Archibald Crie married Mary McMunn on 11 May 1849 in Riccarton, Ayrshire.

His son Archibald Cree was born in 1850 in Riccarton, Ayrshire.2,3,4

His daughter Mary Cree was born in 1851 or 1852 in Abington, Lanarkshire, Scotland.5

His daughter Margaret Cree was born in 1851 or 1852.6

On 30 March 1851 Archibald Crie and Mary McMunn were living in Symington, Ayrshire, Scotland, along with Archibald Cree. Archibald senior was a labourer. He and Mary were both aged 22. Their son Archibald was one year old.4

Archibald Crie was a coal miner on 9 February 1856 in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland.7

His daughter Agnes Cree was born on 9 February 1856 in Bathgate, West Lothian.8,9

His daughter Janet Seymour M Cree was born on 8 February 1858 in Bo'ness, West Lothian, Scotland.

Archibald Crie was a miner on 7 March 1860.10

His son James Cree was born on 11 March 1860 in Newtown, Bo'ness, West Lothian, Scotland.11,5,12

On 7 April 1861 Archibald Crie and Mary McMunn were living in 33 Newtown, Boness, West Lothian, Scotland, along with Archibald Cree, Mary Cree, Agnes Cree and James Cree. Archibald was an ironstone miner and was shown as born at Kilmarnock. The evidence points to a very slapdash enumerator, possible one who was hard of hearing, and a careless transcriber too. The surname was transcribed as "Cora" although the original shows it as Cree. Archibald and Mary's son Archibald was shown as born at "Bickerton." There is no such place as far as I know and it would seem to be a mishearing of Riccarton.

His daughter Jane Gardner Cree was born on 18 February 1862 in Bo'ness, West Lothian.8

His son William McMunn Cree was born on 21 February 1864 in Twechar, Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.3

His son Joseph Cree was born on 27 January 1866 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.8,3,13

His father Archibald Crie died on 2 May 1867 in Riccarton, Ayrshire.14,15,16

His mother Mary Calderwood died on 17 May 1867 in Riccarton, Ayrshire.17,18

His son Henry Crie was born on 11 April 1868 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire.8,19

His daughter Annie McIntyre Cree was born on 4 October 1870 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire.3,20

Archibald Crie was a miner on 10 February 1871.21

Archibald Crie was a coalminer on 25 August 1871.22

His daughter Elizabeth Cree was born on 16 August 1874 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire.3,23

His daughter Mary McMinn Cree was born on 21 February 1875 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire.

On 3 April 1881 Archibald Crie and Mary McMunn were living in 2 Miner's Row, Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, along with Jane Gardner Cree, William McMunn Cree, Joseph Cree, Annie McIntyre Cree, Elizabeth Cree, Mary McMinn Cree and John S McMunn. Archibald was a coal miner aged 52. His daughter Jane was 19 and an agricutural labourer; William, 17, and Joseph, 15, were also coal miners. Annie was 10 and Elizabeth 6. Mary's nephew John S McMinn aged 19, was also a coal miner.24

Archibald Crie was a collier on 2 May 1883.25 As of 11 April 1884, the address of Archibald Crie was an unknown place . Ironstone miner.26

His son Joseph Cree died in 1885 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire.27

His wife Mary McMunn died in 1888 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire.28

On 5 April 1891 Archibald Crie was living in the household of Thomas Law and Agnes Cree in 3 Twechar Row, Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, along with Elizabeth Cree. This address appears to be next door to where Agnes's brother William was living.

Thomas Law was a coal miner aged 38 and Agnes was 36. Their eight children were listed but not shown here. Archibald Cree (surname shown in error as Case) was shown as Thomas's father-in-law, aged 63 and an ironstone miner. Elizabeth was his daughter, aged 16.

His son Archibald Cree died in 1892 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire.29

Archibald Crie died in 1898 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire. "aged 70."30

Thomas Cree was baptised on 2 December 1832 in Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of Archibald Crie and Mary Calderwood.

His daughter Alice Cree was born in 1852 or 1853.2

Thomas Cree married Margaret McCluskie on 3 April 1852 in Low Church, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. Thomas and Margaret were great-grandparents of correspondent Peter Martin. He mentions his gran Mary Cree having died in 1967. He also wote, "The marriage was conducted in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland format although Margaret was Roman Catholic. For what ever reason, all the siblings of the union were Roman Catholic and all subsequent lines have remained so." This may account for the existence of a second marriage record later in the month, which was quite common in Scotland. It could be that the later marriage was a Roman Catholic ceremony.3

Thomas Cree married Margaret McCluskie on 23 April 1852 in Riccarton, Ayrshire. They also married at the Low Church, Kilmarnock.4,5

His son John Cree was born c 1853 in Riccarton, Ayrshire.6
